The Syracuse track and field team begins postseason competition when the Orange heads to Tampa, Fla. for the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships, beginning on Friday at 4:00 p.m. Syracuse hopes to continue to build on a strong season and improve upon last season's ninth place finish at the outdoor championships.
Syracuse has enjoyed some top caliber performances in the BIG EAST this season, particularly in the 10,000m events. Both the men's and women's 10,000m squads have seven top-15 performers in the BIG EAST, with Tito Medrano and Pat Dupont boasting the number one and two performances respectively, for the men, and Sarah Pagano posting the second best finish of BIG EAST women.
Medrano and Pagano are also in the top ten in the 5,000 m event, where they are joined by Martin Hehir's fourth overall ranking on the men's side and Lauren Penney's eighth overall finish amongst women. Penney has also posted the fourth fastest time in the BIG EAST for the women's 1,500m.
The 3,000m Steeple is the Orange's other best event. Five Syracuse women have finished in the top twelve (four in the top seven), with Heather Stephens running the BIG EAST's fastest time of 10:11.51. Meanwhile Dupont and Joseph Whelan lead the men with the BIG EAST's third and fourth best times, respectively.
The Orange have also had top performances from Jarret Eaton, who holds the BIG EAST's fastest time of the year in the 110m hurdles; Jaquan Holland, who ranks fifth in the 200m; Frank Taylor, whose 24'5” long jump is fifth best in the conference; and the men's 4x100m relay team, which ranks third with a time of 41.25 seconds.
Following this weekend's competition, SU will head to Princeton, N.J. for the ECAC and IC4A Championships.
