Final Standings
NEW ORLEANS – The Syracuse men's cross country/track & field team, under the guidance of three-time NCAA Northeast Region Cross Country Coach of the Year Chris Fox, finished 12th in the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) John McDonnell Program of the Year Award on Tuesday. SU's strong performances at the NCAA Cross Country, Indoor Track & Field and Outdoor Track & Field Championships elevated the Orange to its highest finish in program history as well as the highest finish for a BIG EAST school in the history of the award.
"We are very proud of our finish," said Fox. "We have shown with a strong base in distance running, and the addition of outstanding sprinters and hurdlers, that we can compete at the highest levels."
Senior Pat Dupont and the cross country team got the Orange off to a hot start for the 2011-12 campaign, finishing 15th overall at the national championship race in Terre Haute, Ind. Dupont finished the 10k race in 37th place to become the first SU harrier since Roy Osterhaut in 1952 and 1953 to earn All-American selections in back-to-back seasons. Dupont was joined by Tito Medrano, Joseph Whelan, Max Straneva, Forrest Misenti, Sean Keefe and Andrew Palmer at the national title race.
Redshirt senior Jarret Eaton stole the show in the 60-meter hurdles at the 2012 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championship in Nampa, Idaho, becoming the first SU individual track and field champion in program history. Eaton won his event by 0.01 seconds with a time of 7.54 seconds in what Fox called "the best day ever for Syracuse track and field" to complete an undefeated season and earn 10 points towards Syracuse's 18th place team finish overall.
Eaton continued his success into the outdoor season, picking up his second All-American selection of the year with a sixth place finish in the 110-meter hurdles last weekend at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship in Des Moines, Iowa. Eaton's performance earned Syracuse three points toward the team standings.
The John McDonnell Program of the Year Award is named after USTFCCCA Hall of Famer and former Arkansas head coach John McDonnell. McDonnell's Arkansas teams won a combined 40 National Championships and finished in the top ten in cross country, indoor and outdoor track & field in 24 of his 36 seasons in Fayetteville. Five of his teams won the NCAA Triple Crown.
Florida State won the Program of the Year award for the second straight season, edging Indiana by one point. Rounding out the top five was Texas, Texas A&M and Florida in 3rd-5th, respectively.
The NCAA Division I Program of the Year Awards are awarded annually to the most outstanding cross country/track & field programs. The award honors the institution that has achieved the most success in each academic year (spanning the cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field seasons) based on the institution's finish at the NCAA Division I Championships.
