TURKU, Finland – The U.S. U-19 Men's National Lacrosse Team (1-0) opened play at the 2012 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Championship with a resounding 24-6 win against Australia (0-1) on Friday, July 13. Rising Syracuse University sophomore defenseman Ralph D'Agostino scored a goal in the fourth quarter as the Americans improved to 37-0 all-time in U-19 competition.
D'Agostino's tally put the U.S. ahead, 18-6. In addition to his offensive contribution, D'Agostino was part of an American defense that shut out Australia in the third quarter and allowed just two second-half goals overall.
Early on it appeared the Aussies were up for the challenge of facing the heavily favored Americans. Josh Polkinghorne scored to give Australia a 1-0 lead, but it was all U.S. after that. The Americans led 9-4 at the half and outscored Australia 15-2 over the final two quarters to cruise to victory.
Team USA returns to action Saturday, July 14 at Noon (EST) against Canada. The Canadians are widely considered the U.S.'s chief rival and the team's biggest obstacle to a seventh consecutive world title.
