SYRACUSE, N.Y.- After two consecutive BIG EAST heptathlon titles, it's safe to say that Uhunoma Osazuwa made her mark on the Syracuse track and field program. It's now time for Osazuwa to make her mark on a world stage - the Olympics. Osazuwa will represent Nigeria in London this week as she competes for a medal in the heptathlon on both Aug. 3rd and 4th.
"It is an honor to represent Nigeria in the Olympics," said Osazuwa. "I grew up in the US but I'm Nigerian and that's always been such a huge part of my identity so I'm very excited and proud to represent Nigeria."
"We are very proud of Uhunoma becoming a 2012 Olympian and competing in London," commented head coach Chris Fox. "She was great All-American performer at Syracuse with multiple Big East Championships. In addition she was a great student. She represents everything positive about athletics."
Osazuwa set the Nigerian heptathlon record back in May with a total of 6,049 points. The Las Vegas, Nev. native competed for the Orange from 2006-10. Along with her two BIG EAST heptathlon crowns, Osazuwa became Syracuse's first All-American pentathlete after placing sixth at the NCAA Indoor Nationals with a score of 4,061. She qualified for the NCAA championships three times in her career at SU and won two ECAC heptathlon titles.
"If it was not for Syracuse, I would not have realized my ability to do this. During my time at Syracuse, my coach (Enoch Borozinski) told me I had the ability to compete in the Olympics. That stuck with me and lead to me to continue training once I left. My success at Syracuse gave me a taste of what more I could accomplish if I continued training," said Osazuwa.
On Friday, Aug, 4th Osazuwa will compete in the 100m hurdles, high jump, shot put and the 200m. The heptathlon continues on Saturday with the long jump, javelin, and 800m.
