Volleyball Upended by Denver and Kansas State on Day Two of Bluejay Invitational

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Orange volleyball team (3-3) fell to Denver (3-2) and No. 21 Kansas State (6-0) on Saturday in the final day of the Bluejay Invitational at the D.J. Sokol Arena. Junior Lindsay McCabe, (Georgetown, Ontario) was named to the All-Tournament Team, after a trio of standout performances this weekend.
In the first match of the day, McCabe continued to lead the offense with a team-high .500 hitting clip. Her standout performance was not enough to pull off a win as the Orange fell to the Pioneers in three sets (17-25, 18-25, 13-25). McCabe connected on six-of-10 total attempts, adding one dig and two blocks.
Andrea Fisher (Burlington, Ontario), Nicolette Serratore (Oakville, Ontario) and Silvi Uattara (Voronezh, Russian Federation) all tallied five kills for the Orange while setter, Emily Betteridge (Pickering, Ontario) added 24 assists and nine digs.
After dropping the first set, the Orange began the second set with a kill from McCabe and a service ace from Serratore to keep within two points of the Pioneers' lead. As Denver began to pull away at the 12-12 mark, the Orange were able to tie the score five more times, but were unable to regain the lead, falling in the second set.
Denver capitalized on 11 SU attacking errors in the third set as the Pioneers finished off the set 25-13 to take the match. Michele Swopee and Faimie Kingsley led the offense with 17 combined kills and five combined blocks. Lyndi Johnson tallied a team-high 13 digs, while Frances Carroll led with 27 assists.
In the second match of the day, Samantha Hinz (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) led the offense with a team-high .571 hitting percentage, while Samantha Clarey and Silvi Uattara added nine kills apiece.
Lila Porubek was the only Kansas State player to reach double digit kills, tallying 10 kills, three service aces, one dig and one block.
Setter Caitlyn Donahue dished out 41 assists for Kansas State, while Kaitlynn Pelger added three blocks in the Wildcat's win over Syracuse.
The Orange will be back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 4th as they take on Nebraska-Omaha at 7 p.m. in the Sapp Fieldhouse.
