PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Kelsey Millman scored two goals and Leann Stiver recorded her fourth shutout in goal to lead No. 2 Syracuse field hockey (8-0, 2-0 BIG EAST) to a 6-0 victory at Rutgers (4-5, 0-2 BIG EAST) on Friday afternoon.
Emma Russell, Lauren Brooks, Leonie Geyer and Liz McInerney also scored goals for the Orange as it stayed undefeated and is off to the second-best start in program history.
Stiver made four saves as the senior goalkeeper shut out her fourth opponent this season. It was the 16th shutout and 51st win of her career.
The Orange outshot the Scarlet Knights, 17-9, and drew seven penalty corners to Rutgers' five.
Russell started the scoring in the 12th minute as the freshman took a crossing pass from Stephanie Hussey and scored her fourth goal of the year.
Brooks struck next in the 18th minute when she scored her seventh goal of the season off a Gillian Pinder assist before Millman made it 3-0 in the 30th minute off a Brooks assist, a lead the Orange would carry into halftime.
Millman scored again 5:30 into the second half when she pounced on the rebound of a Brooks shot and beat Rutgers' goalie Sarah Stuby. The goal was the senior captain's seventh of the season, tying her with Brooks for the team lead.
Geyer netted her fourth goal of the year when she was awarded a penalty stroke in the 49th minute, Syracuse's first of the season.
McInerney closed the scoring in the 56th minute when the graduate student's blast off a penalty corner found the back of the goal. Her third tally of the season was assisted on by Laura Hahnefeldt and Hussey.
The Orange closes its New Jersey road trip on Sunday when it faces No. 3 Princeton (6-0) in a battle of unbeatens at 2 p.m.
