SYRACUSE, N.Y. - No. 2 Syracuse field hockey (7-0) heads to New Jersey for a pair of road contests this weekend. On Friday, the Orange takes on Rutgers (4-4) in a BIG EAST game at 3 p.m. before facing No. 3 Princeton (6-0) in a key game with NCAA implications on Sunday at 2 p.m.
• The Orange is ranked No. 2 in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll for the third week in a row. After grabbing the spot on Sept. 4 following a No. 7 preseason ranking, Syracuse was tied with Princeton for No. 2 last week.
• Syracuse is also ranked No. 2 in the first NCAA RPI of the season released on Tuesday. Rutgers is 40th and Princeton is fifth.
VS. RANKED OPPONENTS
• Syracuse is 36-51 against ranked teams since 2007, but is an impressive 10-4 in its last 14. SU is 3-0 against ranked teams in 2012 and was 7-4 last season, including a 3-2 win over No. 4 Connecticut in the BIG EAST Championship game.
• The Orange is 16-31 against top 10 teams since 2007.
STRONG STARTERS
• The Orange has started 7-0 for the second time in program history.
• The last time SU started 7-0 was in 2008 when it went on to start 14-0 on the way to a BIG EAST Championship and NCAA Final Four appearance.
THREE STRAIGHT WEEKS AT NO. 2
• For the third week in a row, Syracuse is ranked No. 2 in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll. After taking over the second spot on Sept. 4, the Orange was tied with Princeton last week, and retained the second spot on its own this week.
• Syracuse received 878 total points, including 10 first-place votes. No. 1 North Carolina had 913 points and 30 first-place votes, while No. 3 Princeton had 869 points and eight first-place votes.
• These three weeks at No. 2 is the Orange's highest ranking since being No. 1 on Oct. 14, 2008.
• The Orange was ranked No. 7 in the Aug. 21 preseason poll.
• Syracuse was ranked No. 2 in the poll for three weeks in a row in 2008 before taking over the No. 1 spot for the first time ever the following week.
TOP 10 STREAK REACHES 45 WEEKS
• The Orange has now been ranked in the top 10 of the NFHCA poll for 46-straight weeks, dating back to Aug. 28, 2008. Last season, SU debuted at No. 5 in the poll and held that position for nine of 11 weeks before finishing the season ranked No. 3 in the final poll.
• Syracuse debuted at No. 5 in the poll in 2011 and spent nine of 11 weeks in that fifth position before finishing the season ranked No. 3 in the final poll.
SERIES VS. RUTGERS
• Syracuse is 19-6 all-time against the Scarlet Knights and has won the last nine meetings by a combined score of 41-10 dating back to 2004.
• Last season, the Orange beat Rutgers, 5-1, on Sept. 16 at Coyne Stadium. Amy Kee, Kelsey Millman, Heather Susek, Jordan Page and Liz McInerney all scored goals in a balanced SU attack. Carlie Rouh scored Rutgers' goal.
• The last time the teams played in Piscataway was a 5-1 Orange win on Sept. 18, 2010, another game in which five different players scored.
• Syracuse is 6-0 vs. Rutgers under Ange Bradley and SU is 7-5 all-time at Rutgers.
• Rutgers' last win in the series was 1-0 on Sept. 20, 2003 at Coyne Stadium.
SCOUTING THE SCARLET KNIGHTS
• Rutgers comes into Friday's match 4-4 on the season and is coming off a 1-1 weekend. On Friday, the Scarlet Knights were shut out by Connecticut, 5-0, on the road before winning by shutout on Sunday, 5-0, at Sacred Heart.
• The Orange and Scarlet Knights have two common opponents this season. They lost 2-1 in overtime at home vs. Boston University on Aug. 26 and beat Monmouth on the road, 4-1. Syracuse beat both teams by scores of 2-0 and 8-1, respectively.
• Senior forward Cornelia Duffin is Rutgers' top scorer with four goals on the season on just seven shots.
• Senior Carlie Rouh and junior Lisa Patrone each have three goals on the season.
• Junior Sarah Stuby has played every minute between the pipes, posting a 4-4 record with 1.86 goals against average and .762 save percentage.
• Former Rutgers assistant Meredith Long is in her first season as head coach of the Scarlett Knights and was a member of Maryland's 2005 National Championship team.
SERIES VS. PRINCETON
• Syracuse is 4-11 all-time against the Tigers and snapped a three-game losing streak against them with a 5-0 win last season at Coyne Stadium.
• On Sept. 18, 2011, the fifth-ranked Orange got goals from Martina Loncarica, Heather Susek, Kelsey Millman, Leonie Geyer and Lauren Brooks - all in the second half - while Leann Stiver got the shutout in goal.
• The last time the teams played at Princeton was a 1-0 Tigers win on Sept. 19, 2010.
• Syracuse is 2-6 in games at Princeton.
• The Orange is 2-3 vs. the Tigers under Ange Bradley.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
• Princeton, at 6-0 on the season, is one of just four remaining undefeated teams in the country, joining the Orange (7-0), Connecticut (7-0) and Virginia Commonwealth (6-0).
• The No. 5 Tigers are coming off 4-1 and 10-2 wins at home last weekend over Dartmouth and Delaware. Princeton has also defeated Duke (5-2), Wake Forest (4-2), Penn State (3-2 OT) and Richmond (2-1).
• The Tigers play at Yale on Saturday before returning home to host Syracuse on Sunday.
• Senior forward Kathleen Sharkey is the nation's leading scorer at 2.17 goals per game. She has 31 points on 14 goals and five assists, giving her a hand in 19 of the Tigers' 28 goals this season.
• Senior Katie Reinprecht leads the NCAA in assists per game at 1.33 (eight total). She and junior Michelle Cesan have four goals each.
• Junior Christina Maida has played most of the minutes in goal. She is 6-0 with a 1.63 goals against average and a .625 save percentage.
• Head coach Kristen Holmes-Winn is in her 10th season as head coach. She has a career record of 116-56 and has led Princeton to seven Ivy League titles.
BIG EAST DOMINANCE
• Syracuse's current senior class is 18-1 in BIG EAST Conference games, including perfect 6-0 marks in 2009 and 2010, and has outscored its conference foes, 91-23.
• The Orange is 26-5 in BIG EAST games under Ange Bradley.
• Syracuse won its sixth BIG EAST Championship tournament title on Nov. 6 with a 3-2 victory against Connecticut. After going 5-1 in BIG EAST play during the regular season, the Orange secured the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament.
• SU shutout No. 3 seed Villanova in the semifinals, 3-0 before defeating top-seeded Connecticut, 3-2, in the championship game.
• Syracuse has also won seven BIG EAST regular season championships, the last coming in 2010.
McINERNEY TAKES BIG EAST HONOR
• Following a one-goal, five-assist performance over two games for the No. 2 Syracuse field hockey team (7-0, 1-0 BIG EAST), Liz McInerney was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week by the conference office on Monday.
• The graduate student midfielder played a hand in six of Syracuse's 12 goals in its 2-0 weekend, including two assists in a 5-2 BIG EAST Conference-opening win vs. Villanova on Friday and had a goal and three assists in a 7-1 victory vs. Kent State on Sunday. She assisted on three of the Orange's four first-half goals against the Golden Flashes.
• It is the first such honor of McInerney's career. She was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 10, 2011 and to the conference honor roll on two occasions in 2011.
2-0 HOME WEEKEND
• Lauren Brooks and Leonie Geyer scored two goals each as No. 2 Syracuse defeated Villanova (4-3, 0-1) in the BIG EAST field hockey opener last Friday at J.S. Coyne Stadium.
• Kelsey Millman also scored for the Orange. Liz McInerney tallied two assists on the day for SU, while Jordan Page and Emma Russell also added helpers of their own.
• Syracuse improved to 7-0 for the second time in program history and ran its home winning streak to 32 games with a dominating 7-1 victory vs. Kent State on Sunday afternoon.
• Liz McInerney scored a goal and assisted on three others, marking the Orange's first three-assist game since Martina Loncarica on Oct. 16, 2011 vs. Vermont, and Jordan Page scored two goals to lead the Syracuse offense.
• Lauren Brooks, Kelsey Millman, Iona Holloway and Anna Crumb all added goals of their own.
ORANGE-HOT AT HOME
• The Orange has been dominating at J.S. Coyne Stadium since sixth-year head coach Ange Bradley took the reins in 2007 as it currently rides a 32-game home winning streak dating back to 2009.
• SU has outscored the opposition, 140-25, or an average score of 4.4-0.8, during the winning streak.
• Syracuse is 48-6 (.889) overall, including 34-4 (.895) in non-conference games and 14-2 (.875) in BIG EAST games, at home under Ange Bradley (since 2007).
• This season, SU is 4-0 at home and outscored its opponents, 19-3. In 2011, Syracuse went 13-0 at home and outscored the opposition, 65-9.
• SU's last home loss was on Sept. 6, 2009 vs. No. 7 Princeton, 3-2, in overtime.
STIVER STYMIES OFFENSES
• Senior goalkeeper Leann Stiver is off to a hot start in 2012. She is 7-0 with a .762 save percentage and a 0.78 goals against average, allowing just five goals in 447 minutes and 11 seconds of play.
• Stiver entered the week ranked third in the NCAA in goals against average and 20th in save percentage.
• With SU's 1-0 overtime win vs. No. 2 North Carolina (9/1), Stiver became the first goalie since 2009 to shut out the Tar Heels.
• The Amherst, N.Y. native entered the season as the NCAA active leader in career save percentage and in the top five in goals against average.
AMONG THE NATION'S BEST
• Syracuse ranks among the nation's best in several statistical categories. The Orange is currently the fourth-highest scoring offense in the country at 4.57 goals per game and is the third stingiest defense, allowing just 0.85 goals per game, combining to give Syracuse the second-best scoring margin in the NCAA (+3.67).
• The Orange defense, led by backs Anna Crumb, Laura Hahnefeldt and Iona Holloway, and anchored by goalkeeper Leann Stiver, has posted three shutouts this season, tied for second-most in the country. Two of those have come against ranked teams (No. 2 UNC and No.12 BU).
• Moving the ball is the name of the game for the Orange offense as it ranks No. 4 in the NCAA in assists per game (3.43) and Liz McInerney is tied for fourth-most individually with .86 per game.
