
Orange Swept By Marquette

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Syracuse Orange volleyball squad (7-8) was swept by the Marquette Golden Eagles (10-3) on Saturday afternoon in the BIG EAST opener for both teams at the Al McGuire Center.
The Orange hung with Marquette for much of the first set, trailing by only four points heading into a Syracuse timeout at 17-13. SU came out strong after the timeout as Silvi Uattara, Emily Betteridge, Andrea Fisher, Gosia Wlaszczuk and Monika Salkute all recorded kills to put SU two points away from the lead at 21-19.
A pair of kills from Holly Mertens and Linsdey Gosh ended the Orange's opportunity to take the lead as the Golden Eagles took the first set 25-19. Mertens and Gosh led the Marquette offense with double-digit kills, combining for 22 of the team's 43 total kills.
The Golden Eagles held Syracuse to a -.097 hitting clip in the second set as the Orange entered the third set down by two. Rebounding, the Orange held Marquette to a .194 hitting clip in the third set, but it was not enough to send the match into the fourth set, as MU took the third set 25-20 to end the match.
Fisher led the Orange offense with eight kills and two blocks, including one solo block. Betteridge returned to the court dishing out 18 assists and nine digs, while Wlaszczuk led the defense with five blocks.
Syracuse will return home to the Women's Building to take on Niagara on Wednesday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m.
