SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse Orange volleyball squad (8-8) snapped a three game losing streak with a 3-2 (25-21, 21-25, 26-24, 27-29, 15-10) win over Niagara (6-8) on Wednesday night in the Women's Building.
"We are trying to build a new culture here at Syracuse and we want to build a culture where it is unacceptable to lose. It is challenging, but this win is a step toward building this culture and getting people to respond to it," said head coach Leonid Yelin.
Freshman Gosia Wlasczcuk led the SU offense, recording her second double-double performance of the season, posting 13 kills and 15 digs. Andrea Fisher and Silvi Uattara both had at least 10 kills, while Melina Violas recorded a career-high 29 digs for the Orange.
Syracuse came out firing in the first set, getting off to a 3-0 start, taking advantage of two Niagara attacking errors. The Orange were able to take the first set 25-21 but fell to the Purple Eagles 21-25 in the second set, tying the match at 1-1.
The Orange and the Purple Eagles battled back and forth throughout the third and fourth sets, as SU won set three 26-24 but could not end the match in the fourth set, falling 27-29 to send the match into the deciding fifth set.
The fifth set featured five tie scores before the Orange went on a 5-0 run to end the match at 15-10. Sophomore Nicolette Serratore led the Orange attack recording three kills during the scoring run.
Ellen Senf, Amanda Sedor and Kari Honomichi all led the Purple Eagle offense with 10 or more kills but could not hold the lead, giving SU the victory.
Syracuse will hit the road for two important BIG EAST road tests this weekend. The Orange will take on DePaul at 2 p.m. (CT) on Saturday, Sept. 29 before traveling to Notre Dame to face the Fighting Irish on Sunday, Sept. 30 at 2 p.m. (EST).
