Volleyball Wraps Up Road Trip In Iowa State Tournament

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Orange volleyball squad (3-4) will look for a happy ending to a ten-day road series this weekend, heading to Ames, Iowa to compete in the Iowa State Tournament. Looking to rebound off of a tough loss to Nebraska-Omaha earlier in the week, Syracuse will face Iowa (5-2) and Eastern Washington (0-7) on Friday, Sept. 7 before facing tournament host Iowa State (2-3) on Saturday, Sept. 8 in the final day of the competition.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
IOWA: Returning 12 letterwinners and four starters from 2011, the Hawkeyes are entering this weekend as the only team with a winning record. Alex Lovell will lead the Iowa offense this weekend with a .231 hitting clip, averaging 3.28 kills per set.
EASTERN WASHINGTON: The Eagles will look to earn their first win of the 2012 campaign, entering the Iowa State Tournament with a 0-7 record. Talia Fermantez is at the head of the Eastern Washington defense, posting a team-high 27 blocks and averaging 1.17 blocks per set. This is the second meeting between EWU and the Orange. Eastern currently leads, 1-0.
IOWA STATE : Ranked 18th in the latest Weekly AVCA Division I Coaches Poll, the Cyclones enter this weekend 203. Led by All-Americans Alison Landweher, Kristen Hahn and Jamie Straube, Iowa State is looking to extend their streak to seven consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances in 2012.
BETTERIDGE IN THE BIG EAST STATS:
Sophomore setter Emily Betteridge is currently ranked sixth in the BIG EAST category for assists. Within the assists category, Betteridge is the highest ranked sophomore with 505 career assists.
FOUR EARN DOUBLE-DOUBLES:
Junior Samantha Clarey leads the team in double-double performances, after recording 14 kills, 11 digs against Illinois-Chicago and 18 kills, 10 digs the next day against Bryant. Sophomores Andrea Fisher and Nicolette Serratore both racked up double digit kills and digs against tournament host, Colgate in the Colgate Classic. Fisher led with 18 kills and 13 digs, while Serratore added 16 kills and 11 digs.
WHAT'S NEXT:
The Orange will return to the road next weekend, traveling to the Blue and White Classic in Buffalo, N.Y. Syracuse will face Hartford at 4:30 on Friday, Sept. 14, returning to take on Dartmouth at 2:30 p.m. and Buffalo at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15.
