
Orange Volleyball Goes 1-1 In First Day of Iowa State Tournament

AMES, Iowa – The Syracuse Orange volleyball squad snapped its five-game losing streak defeating Eastern Washington 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-19) in the Hilton Coliseum at the Iowa State Tournament in Ames, Iowa. Freshman Silvi Uattara led the Orange with a double-double performance against Iowa, posting 17 kills and 14 digs in the SU loss to the Hawkeyes.
The Orange lost the first match of the day to Iowa 3-2 (25-16, 20-25, 25-20, 25-15, 11-15) in a close loss. Junior Samantha Clarey led the team with 19 kills and eight digs, adding one service ace.
Senior Zoe Guzman led the Orange defense with a career-high 19 digs and three assists.
Allessandra Dietz and Chante' Thompson led the Hawkeye offense with 12 kills apiece while, Alex Lovell led with a team-high 14 kills, eight digs and one block.
In the second match of the day, Syracuse took advantage of 12 of the Eagles' attacking errors in the second and third set to take the match. 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-19). Starting setter Emily Betteridge led with 38 assists while Uttara continued her stellar offensive performance, leading the team with 19 kills.
The Orange will head back out on the road next weekend to face Hartford, Dartmouth and Buffalo in the Blue and White Classic, held in Buffalo, N.Y. on Friday, Sept. 14th.
