SYRACUSE – The Orange is back in action this Saturday on the road against No. 70 Georgia State at 11 a.m. in the Ken Byers Tennis Complex. Despite a 4-3 loss to No. 20 Georgia Tech on Thursday, Syracuse will return to court ready to take on the Panthers.
ORANGE EDGED BY YELLOW JACKETS:
Syracuse opened Thursday's match 0-3 in doubles, before suffering two early singles losses on courts one and two. Sophomore Komal Safdar sparked momentum with a 6-2, 6-3 win on court three to revive the team as SU followed with two more consecutive wins from sophomore Jimena Wu and freshman Sophia Dzulynsky, who pushed through a pair of tough matches.
Wu defeated Georgia Tech's Natasha Prokhenvsk by a score of 6-2, 4-6, 7-6, 7-4 on court four, while Dzulynsky topped Jasmine Minor 7-5, 3-6, 1-0, 11-9 on court five, clinching her second straight career singles victory. Without the doubles points though, the Yellow Jackets prevailed, taking the match 4-3.
SCOUTING THE PANTHERS:
Georgia State is ranked just two spots ahead of Syracuse at No. 70, according to the ITA rankings, after finishing 11-7 overall last season. Junior Abigail Tere-Apisah has returned to lead the Panthers this year, following a stellar 2012 spring season. Ranked No. 29 in singles, Tere-Apisah went 8-5 in singles play and 7-1 in doubles play this fall, posting victories against five nationally-ranked singles opponents. The Panthers will also open their 2013 season this weekend.
NEW YEAR, NEW OPPONENTS:
The Orange has never met either of its opponents scheduled for this weekend in a regular season dual match. With a clean slate, Syracuse will look to pick up a pair of wins for the first time in program history, to secure a 1-0 lead in the all-time series.
LOOKING AHEAD:
Next weekend the SU tennis team will hit the road once more, heading to Boston College to take face another future ACC opponent on Friday, Jan. 25 at 5 p.m. Then the Orange will return to Drumlins to host its first home match of the season against Navy on Sunday, Jan. 27 at 9 a.m.
