ATLANTA – Despite three straight singles victories from sophomores Komal Safdar, Jimena Wu and freshman Sophia Dzulynsky, the trio of triumphs were not enought to top the tough doubles competition, as the No. 72 Orange fell to No. 20 Georgia Tech, 4-3.
Syracuse opened the match 0-3 in doubles and suffered two early singles losses on courts one and two before Safdar sparked momentum with a 6-2, 6-3 win on court three. SU followed with two more consecutive wins as Wu and Dzulynsky pushed through a pair of tough matches.
Wu defeated Natasha Prokhenvsk by a score of 6-2, 4-6, 7-6, 7-4 on court four, while Dzulynsky defeated Jasmine Minor 7-5, 3-6, 1-0, 11-9 on court five to clinch her second straight singles victory of her career.
Without the points from the doubles matches, the Orange was unable to overcome the Yellow Jackets, as they took the first-ever match in the Ken Byers Tennis Complex, 4-3.
SU is back in action on Saturday, taking on No. 70 Georgia State at 11 a.m. in the Ken Byers Tennis Complex.
