SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Jim Boeheim surpassed Bobby Knight for sole possession of second place on the Division I all-time wins list with 903 victories after the #7/7 Orange (13-1, 1-0) beat Rutgers (9-3, 0-1) in the Carrier Dome.
Only one member of the elite 900 club is ahead of Boeheim, as Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski is in first place with 936 career wins.
The 78-53 triumph was Syracuse's 13th straight win against the Scarlet Knights, improving the all-time series to 39-9 and extending the Orange's home-court winning streak to 33 consecutive games, which is the longest, active span in Division I.
Senior Brandon Triche led the offense with a season-high 25 points, after shooting .727 (8-of-11) from the field and .714 (5-of-7) from behind the three-point arc. Sophomore Michael Carter-Williams recorded his eighth double-double of the season, totaling 12 points and 10 assists.
Down by two points at 20-18 with 8:19 remaining in the opening frame, SU quickly responded with a 21-0 run that lasted just shy of six minutes, propelling the Orange ahead of the Scarlet Knights by 19 points, as they entered the intermission at 39-20. Senior James Southerland led with seven points during the span, while junior C.J. Fair tallied six points.
Carter-Williams opened the second half with his second three-pointer of the game to stretch the scoring streak to 24-0, marking the longest unanswered run of the season for Syracuse.
The Orange took its largest lead of the game with 10:48 remaining, as Triche connected on two back-to-back three-pointers to extend the advantage to 29 points at 64-35.
Syracuse wil hit the road this weekend, traveling to USF to take on the Bulls at noon on Sunday, Jan. 6th.
