TAMPA – Despite a slow start in the first half, the #7/7 Orange (14-1, 2-0) regrouped and came from behind to claim a (9-4, 0-1) 55-44 victory on the road against USF (9-4) in the Sun Dome on Sunday afternoon.
The triumph against the Bulls extends the Orange advantage to 10-1 in the all-time series, as SU remains unbeaten in the conference.
Senior Brandon Trich led the offense with 20 points, four rebounds and three assists, while senior James Southerland followed closely behind, recording 17 points. Junior C.J. Fair posted a double-double, totaling 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The Orange began its fight to the top after freshman Jerami Grant followed two free throws from Triche with a jumper to put the Orange within one at 22-23. Settling into a rhythm, Triche drove to the basket for a layup to give SU its first lead of the half at 24-23 with 3:23 remaining in the opening period.
From there, Syracuse stretched its scoring spurt to a 12-0 run to secure a seven-point lead heading into the intermission at 30-23. Fair and Triche led the offense during the first half, posting 10 points each.
Struggling offensively from the start of the game, the Bulls used a 9-0 run to pull away with a 10-point lead at 17-7, before senior James Southerland connected on a three-pointer, to halt the attack setting the score at 10-17 with 11:16 remaining in the first period.
Picking up the pace, SU responded with an 8-2 run, led by junior C.J. Fair, who maneuvered through traffic for a pair of consecutive buckets, helping the Orange within three points of the lead at 18-21.
Syracuse never trailed in the second half, as the Orange stopped a final attempt to steal the lead by USF at 47-42 with 6:33 remaining in the game. Denying the Bulls the opportunity, Southerland hit a thTree-pointer and Triche followed with a layup and two free throws to end the game with a 55-44 victory.
SU will continue its road trip, traveling to Providence to meet the Friars on Wednesday, Jan. 9 at 7 p.m.
