SYRACUSE, N.Y.- The Syracuse ice hockey team returned to the ice after a month off and shut out Colgate, 6-0, at Tennity Ice Pavilion this evening. Leading the Orange (10-8-1, 4-1-1 CHA) was sophomore forward Shiann Darkangleo who scored a hat trick against the Raiders. Not only was Darkangelo's hat trick the second of her career, it was the third ever to be scored by Syracuse.
Junior goaltender Kallie Billadeau was credited with the shutout, her fifth of the season and seventh of her career. Billadeau notched 22 saves in the nonconference matchup.
Freshman forward Emily Auerbacher got the puck moving for SU by scoring her first career goal at 4:15 in the first period. Auerbacher shot the puck just below the blue line to record her first points in Orange.
A four-goal second period helped build the Orange's lead. During the second frame was when Darkangelo also scored her hat trick. The Brighton, Mich. native scored her first goal of the night only 1:05 into the period off of a pass from sophomore Brittney Krebs.
It was then Kreb's turn to score her first tally of the season. While the Orange were killing off a penalty at 3:29, Krebs dumped the puck up the ice and it eventually found the back of the net, putting SU up, 3-0.
At 9:12, freshman Melissa Piacentini received the puck from fellow freshman Danielle Leslie. Piacentini found Darkangelo in front of the net where she scored her second goal of the game. The Raiders then called a timeout and switched out goalies, putting Brittney Brooks between the pipes. Only 20 seconds later, Darkangelo scored again and the Orange took a 5-0 lead heading into the third period.
Senior Jacquie Greco secured the Orange's 10th victory of the season by notching her fifth goal of the season at 9:14 in the third period. Piacentini was credited with the helper, bringing her assist total to two on the night.
SU outshot the Raiders, 31-22, and both teams were scoreless on the power play. Ashlynne Rando recorded 10 saves while Brooks notched 15 against SU.
