SYRACUSE, N.Y. – After opening up Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) play with a four-game home stand, Syracuse will take their first ACC road trip this weekend in search of their first conference victory. The Orange will take on Virginia on Friday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. and Virginia Tech on Sunday, Oct. 13 at 1 p.m.
LAST WEEK:
The Orange wrapped up a stretch of four consecutive home games with setbacks to formerly-ranked No.11 UNC and NC State. SU stuck with the Tar Heels throughout the first two sets, but failed to capitalize down the stretch in either and UNC cruised to a win in the final set to earn the victory (25-21, 25-20, 25-15). Against NC State, SU dropped the first two sets, came back to win the third, but the Wolfpack was able to pull away with a late 8-1 run to claim the match (25-11, 25-17, 20-25, 25-18).
Sophomore outside hitter Silvi Uattara was the Orange's most dominant performer with averages of 3.57 kills and 2.00 digs per set. She led Syracuse with 17 kills and a .341 hitting percentage against NC State, while finishing second on the team with seven digs and three block assists. Redshirt junior Lindsay McCabe continues to move up the conference leaderboard after recording 1.29 blocks per set over the weekend.
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION:
Virginia: Last weekend, UVA finished 1-1 against conference-foes Pittsburgh and Maryland, which brings them to 2-2 in the ACC and 9-7 overall. The Cavaliers are paced by Lauren Fuller and Tori Janowski. Fuller leads the conference and is ranked 19th in the nation with 11.40 assists per set while Janowski, who has a team-best 243 kills, ranks fifth in the conference with 3.86 kills per set. Emily Rottman averaged 5.56 digs per set over the weekend for the Cavaliers to bring her average up to 4.49 on the season, good for fifth in the conference.
Virginia Tech: The Hokies split results this past weekend, falling short to Pittsburgh in straight sets on Friday before defeating Maryland 3-2 on Saturday. Virginia Tech now sits at 14-4 overall, tied for the most wins among ACC institutions. Lindsey Owens (31 aces) and Victoria Hamsher (.404 hitting percentage) both lead the conference in their respective categories. Another pair of Hokies rank in the nation's top-50 individually. Jordan Fish's 11.16 assists per set is third-best in the ACC and 27th in the country while Latasha Samson-Akpan is fourth in the conference and 42nd nationally with 1.27 blocks per set. As a unit, Virginia Tech is the most efficient hitting team in the ACC and is 18th in the country with a hitting percentage of 0.277.
BUILDING BLOCKS:
After taking over sole possession of eighth place on the career block assist list last Friday night, Lindsay McCabe added a game-high five block assists to her total on Sunday to become just the eighth player in school history to reach the 300 block assist plateau. She needs just 12 total blocks to move into a tie for eighth on the career total blocks list.
SERIES HISTORY:
Syracuse and Virginia have only met five times, but four of those contests came between 1990 and 1992. SU won the first two meetings in straight sets, while Virginia has won the last three. The two teams played twice in 1992 with the Cavaliers taking both matches. Virginia also won the most recent matchup in 2003 in four sets.
In four previous meetings between Syracuse and Virginia Tech, three of them came between 2001 and 2003 when both schools were members of the BIG EAST Conference. The Hokies won the first match in straight sets back in 1993. After the Orange earned a sweep in 2001, VT went on to sweep SU in 2002 and take a five-setter in 2003.
