SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Kallie Billadeau made 39 saves in goal for the Orange, but it was not enough as Syracuse women's ice hockey (1-3-0) was edged by No. 3 Clarkson (4-0-0), 2-1, in the home opener at Tennity Ice Pavilion on Friday night. The senior netminder from Minnetonka, Minn. kept the Orange in it all night, despite a 41-18 shot advantage for the Golden Knights.
Syracuse made things interesting at the end as Nicole Renault scored on a wrister from the point with a two-man advantage to make it a 2-1 game with 7:32 remaining, but Clarkson's defense was able to hold off the Orange in the games closing minutes.
Syracuse tried pulling Billadeau for the extra skater with 1:10 remaining, but a couple defensive zone face-offs and penalty with 24 seconds left ended the threat.
The Orange penalty killing unit was sharp, holding the Clarkson power play to 0-for-5. The Knights came into the game 6-for-20 with the extra attacker. Syracuse was 1-of-5 on the power play.
Carly Mercer started the scoring for Clarkson with 1:40 left in the first period when she scored her second of the season. The game would stay 1-0 until there was 16:26 remaining in the second period and Mercer struck again, with linemate Jamie Lee Rattray picking up her second assist of the night on the goal.
With 8:11 left in the third period, Clarkson was called for a pair of minor penalties, giving the Orange the two-man advantage. It took just 39 seconds before Renault, a sophomore from Plymouth, Mass., took a cross-ice pass from Caitlin Roach and snapped a shot from the right point by Clarkson goalie Erica Howe's right shoulder for her first goal of the year. Roach and Melissa Piacentini picked up assists on the play.
Howe finished with 17 saves for the Knights.
Syracuse and Clarkson meet on again on Saturday, this time at Cheel Arena in Potsdam. Puck drops at 4 p.m.
