SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Dan Metzger scored the game's only goal in the 56th minute to lead No. 12 Maryland (8-3-5, 5-1-3 ACC) past the SU men's soccer team (9-6-1, 2-6-1 ACC) by the final tally of 1-0 Saturday, Oct. 26 at the SU Soccer Stadium.
"It was a good game," said SU head coach Ian McIntyre. "I think we are a decent college team and we played against an elite opponent and I thought we did very well. We played a very good team and stopped a very good team from looking like a very good team."
In a matchup of two of the highest scoring teams in the ACC, the Orange and Terrapins played to a scoreless first half. Emil Ekblom had a pair of decents looks from inside the box in the opening 45 minutes as the rookie attempted to get the hosts on board. Both shots went just wide of the goal.
Maryland struck for the game's only goal early in the second half when Sunny Jane played a crisp pass from the right flank to an open Metzger at the top of the box. Metzger took one touch and fired an accurate shot past the outstretched arms of a diving Alex Bono to give the Terps the lead.
Syracuse had several chances to tally the equalizer during the latter stages of the match, but could not convert.
In the 68th minute, Oyvind Alseth blasted a free kick into the box that missed two charging Syracuse attackers and bounced off the post. Approximately 19 minutes later, Chris Nanco's on-point strike forced Terrapin goalkeeper Zack Steffen to dive to his left to make an athletic save and preserve the clean sheet.
Bono and Steffen both finished with one save apiece. Maryland recorded eight shots, while Syracuse had seven. The Orange held a slim 6-5 advantage in corner kicks.
Syracuse returns to action on Friday, Nov. 1 when it hosts ACC rival Clemson in its regular-season home finale. The Orange and Tigers kick off at 7 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium. Admission is free.
Match Notes: Syracuse held Maryland's Patrick Mullins, the NCAA leader in points and goals, to one shot ... Nick Perea did not start against the Terps, ending his streak of consecutive starts at 48. Perea came off the bench and played 63 minutes.
