'Cuse Defeats PSU, 4-3 in Overtime

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.—The Orange finished strong to come from behind and defeat Penn State (2-9-1, 0-4-0 CHA), 4-3 in overtime on Sunday afternoon at Pegula Ice Arena. Syracuse (6-4-0, 2-0-0 CHA) scored two goals in the third period to force overtime and netted the game winning goal 1:27 into the extra period to stay perfect in conference play.
SU took a season-high 55 shots on net including 21 in the second period. PSU had only 23 shots on target including just four in the second period and none in overtime.
The Orange scored one power play goal on six opportunities and killed five of the Orange's six penalties.
Jenesica Drinkwater was the goalie in net against PSU, recording her third win of the season (3-0-0). Drinkwater made 20 saves in the constest, the fewest she has made in a game all season.
Despite outshooting the Nittany Lions in both the first and second period, Penn State was able to take a 2-0 lead early in the game. PSU notched its first score with 3:28 left in the first period and came out strong in the second to go up 2-0 with 14:57 to go in the period.
Syracuse was able to cut the deficit before going into the second intermission when Akane Hosoyamada notched a power play goal with 0:49 left in the second period. Caitlin Roach and Jessica Sibley both assisted on the play.
SU came out shooting in the third period and tied the game at 2-2 off a Nicole Ferrara goal 3:37 into the third stanza. Margot Scharfe started the play and was credited with an assist. Penn State wouldn't go down without a fight and regained the lead three and a half minutes later, scoring on the power play.
SU wouldn't settle for a loss, however and sophomore Danielle Leslie scored the first goal of her career to tie it at 3-3 and force overtime. Ferrara and Scharfe, who both had two points on the day, assisted on the score. Freshman Jessica Sibley scored her first career game-winning goal 1:27 into overtime to lift Syracuse past Penn State. The goal was her fourth of the season which is tied for the most on the team. Heather Schwarz and Melissa Piacentini were credited with assists on the goal.
SU plays again next weekend at Mercyhurst on Friday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 16 at 2 p.m.
