Last Minute Goal Lifts SU Past Colgate

SYRACUSE, N.Y.—Allie LaCombe sent in the game-winning goal in the closing seconds to give the Syracuse ice hockey team (7-6-2) a 2-1 victory over Colgate(3-13-0) on Tuesday night at the Onondaga War Memorial. This is the third game-winner LaCombe has notched so far this season.

Jenesica Drinkwater was between the pipes for Syracuse and kept her record a perfect 4-0-0 with her 18-save performance against the Raiders. Brittney Brooks was in net for Colgate and made 36 saves in her efforts against the Orange.

The Orange played an aggressive offense in second and third periods, outshooting Colgate 58-17 in the final 40 minutes. The Raiders put just eight shots on target in the last two stanzas while Syracuse notched 31 shots at the goalie.

Neither team was able to gain much of an advantage throughout the first period, each getting 13 shots off. Drinkwater had 10 shots come her way and she made impressive saves to keep the score at 0-0 going into the second period.

Colgate was the first to score in the game when Rachel Walsh took a shot at Drinkwater, who made the save, but Walsh would strip the puck away from the SU netminder before she was able to maintain possession and stop play. Walsh passed it left to Miriam Drubel, who was waiting at the crease and shot it in before Drinkwater could turn and make the save. Colgate took a 1-0 lead with 4:02 remaining in the second period.

The Orange refused to go into the second intermission with a deficit and scored with 13 seconds remaining in the period. Julie Knerr took a shot at Brooks which led to a scrum in front of the goal. In the midst of Colgate defenders and SU players, the puck slid out, giving Heather Schwarz enough room to get a shot off. Schwarz flicked it up and over traffic, scoring her first career goal and tying the game at 1-1 before heading into the locker room.

Syracuse attempted 30 shots throughout the third period but it was the final one that would win the game. Jessica Sibley shot one at Brooks, who was able to make the save but LaCombe fired right back, this time with success and the Orange took a 2-1 lead with just 35 seconds remaining in the game, which wasn't enough time for Colgate to stop the SU victory.

SU is now 2-1 all-time at the War Memorial and moves to 3-2-1 at home this season. This was also the first Syracuse home game ever televised, airing on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel.

The Orange plays again on Tuesday, Dec. 3 at the Onondaga War Memorial, taking on No. 3 Cornell at 7 p.m. The game will air on TWC SportsChannel.
