SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse men's basketball team used a 16-0 run early in the second half to pull away from Ryerson for an 81-46 exhibition victory on Tuesday, Nov. 5 in the Carrier Dome.
The Orange's defense was on display Tuesday evening, forcing 23 turnovers while out-rebounding the Rams 49-37. SU held a 21-11 edge on the offensive glass, which led to a 22-9 advantage on second-chance points. Syracuse also finished with six blocked shots.
Senior forward C.J. Fair led all scorers with 18 points and had a game-best three blocks to go with six rebounds. Sophomore forward DaJuan Coleman posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Junior forward Rakeem Christmas chipped in on both ends of the court with 10 points and eight rebounds. Freshman guard Tyler Ennis had a solid outing with seven points, five assists and a game-high four steals.
For the game, Syracuse shot 43.1-percent (28-65) and held Ryerson to 30.8-percent (16-52). SU also enjoyed 20 points at the charity stripe to just eight for the visitors.
Jean-Victor Mukama opened the game's scoring with a basket from long range. However, Syracuse answered with the next 11 points to spark a 16-2 run behind seven points from Fair for a 16-5 lead with 12:38 to go in the half. Maintaining the same margin at 18-9, the Orange turned up the defensive pressure with another six points from Fair during a 12-0 run to go up 30-9 with 4:34 left in the first. Aaron Best scored five points for the Rams in the closing minutes to pull Ryerson within 39-23 at the break.
After Ryerson started the second half with four of the first six points, Syracuse recorded the next 16, thanks to a pair of three's from Trevor Cooney and four points apiece DaJuan Coleman and Ennis for a 59-27 advantage. The Rams snapped the scoreless drought after more than five minutes on a three by Jahmal Jones.
Leading 68-38, SU went on a seven-point spurt for the largest lead of the night at 75-38 with 6:20 left to play in the contest.
Best and Adika Peter-McNeilly shared team-high scoring with 11 points apiece. Peter-McNeilly also tallied team-bests of six assists and three steals while adding five boards.
