NEWTON, Mass. -Â Emily Wold's first-half goal proved to be the difference on Friday in the ACC Championship semifinals as third-seeded North Carolina defeated second-seed Syracuse, 1-0. The No. 2-ranked nationally Orange (16-3) now awaits the NCAA Selection Show on Sunday at 10 p.m. on NCAA.com. The Tar Heels advance to face Maryland in Sunday's final.
Â
It appeared Syracuse had tied the game with 3:10 remaining in the second half when Jordan Page sent a ball into the circle that found the back of the net. After the officials called it a goal, the play was reviewed. The call was then reversed following the video review, which is being used in the ACC Championship for the first time, when it was deemed a defender did not touch the ball inside the scoring circle.
Â
Syracuse continued to apply late pressure. UNC goalie Sassi Ammer made back-to-back saves on shots by Emma Russell and Lauren Brooks with just under a minute to go, and after the Orange pulled goalie Jess Jecko for an extra attacker, earned a penalty corner just before time expired. With zeroes on the clock, Leonie Geyer's shot was stopped by Ammer for her seventh save and UNC cleared to end the game.
Â
Wold scored the game's lone goal in the 25th minute on a diving deflection of a crossing pass from Loren Shealy for her fifth goal of the season.
Â
Final shots were 9-5 in favor of the Orange, while SU earned four penalty corners and UNC had none.
Â
Jecko finished the game with two saves in goal for Syracuse.
Â
It was the second 1-0 game between the two teams in less than a week. The Orange defeated the Tar Heels in the regular season finale last Saturday at Coyne Field.
