SU Sets Sights on BIG EAST Championships

The Syracuse track and field team heads to the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio for the 2013 BIG EAST Indoor Championships. The Orange will have 37 student-athletes compete in 18 different events this weekend. Action begins on Saturday, Feb, 16th at 11 a.m. and continues on Sunday, Feb. 17th at 9 a.m.

Hurdles
In the men's 60-m hurdles, Darren McCluskey, Amadou Gueye and Donald Polittt will compete for the Orange. Pollitt most recently set at PR in the 60m hurdles at the Kane Invitational, with a time of 7.86 that put him in second place. His mark of 7.86 leads the BIG EAST. He also won the 60m title at the Upstate Challenge with a time of 7.97 in December. McCluskey's best time this season came at the Armory Collegiate (8.29) while Gueye tied his PR time of 7.89 at the Amory Collegiate Invitational.

Sa'De Lewis set her PR in the 60m hurdles this past weekend with a time of 8.58 at the Kane Invitational where she took first place in the race. She also took first at the Upstate Challenge in December with a time of 8.66.

Sprints
In the 60-m dash, Jihaad Howard, Nathaniel Mercer, Colin Reno and Jaquan Holland will all race. Howard set his PR at the Upstate Challenge with a time of 6.83. At the New Balance Collegiate, Reno set his PR in the race with a time of 6.98. In two races this year, Mercer recorded a time of 7.05 each time. Holland ran his PR this season at the PSU National (6.82). Both Reno and Holland will also race in the 200m dash.

In the women's 60-m dash, Shania Harrison, Ashley Keyes and Sabrina Cammock will all race. Harrison's best time this season came at the NYC Gotham Cup where she finished in second (7.42). Keyes set her PR at the Upstate Challenge (7.70) while Cammock set hers more recently at the Kane Invitational (7.71). Rebecca Robinson will race in the 400m dash. Robinson's best time this season came at the Armory Collegiate Invitational where she finished eight (56.18).

Distance
In the 1000m run, Joshua Hayman and Andrew Nelson will represent the Orange. Both harriers' top times this season in the race came at the PSU Nationals, with Hayman recording a time of 2.29.36 and Nelson notching a time of 2:27.73. Forrest Misenti will race in the mile after recording a PR of 4:15.28 at the Kane Invitational.

Martin Hehir, Joseph Whelan, Robert Molke and Ryan Urie will run in the 3000m. Hehir took first at the Kane Invitational in the 3000m run with a time of 8:10.93. Whelan's quickest time came at the PSU National's (8:12.74), as did Molke's (8:18.33). Hehir will also compete in the 5000m run, with Tito Medrano, Andrew Palmer and Reed Kamyszek. Â Medrano's recorded his top time at the PSU Invitational of 8:19.81. Palmer set his PR at the PSU National (14:15.22) while Kamyszek ran a time of 14:26.26 in the same race.

Brianna Nerud and Molly Malone will be SU's representatives in the women's 1000m run. Nerud set the school record in the 1000m at the PSU Nationals with a time of 2:48.85. Malone ran the 1000m in 2:51.07 at the PSU Nationals. Maura Linde will compete in the mile, after recording 5:04.53 at the Kane Invitational.

In the 3000m run, Lauren Penney, Sarah Pagano, Shaylyn Tuite and Brenna Symoniak will race. Penney had a record-breaking performance at the Husky Classic, setting a new PR and school record in the 3000m with a time of 9.06:32. Pagano set her PR at the PSU National with a time of 9:37.66. Symoniak set her PR also at the PSU National with a time of 9:49.30. Tuite's fastest time this season was at the Kane Invite (9:50.25). Pagano, along with Jessie Peterson, Erin Cawley and Emily Nist, will race in the 5000m. Nist ran to an eighth place finish at the PSU Nationals with a time of 17:24.66.

Jumps
Jabari Butler will compete in the high jump after recording a jump of 1.99m at the Kane Invitational. Â In the long jump, Will Watson will compete after jumping 7.13m at the Kane invitational. For the women, both Klarissa Ricks and Mikayla Pearce will compete in the long jump. Ricks jumped to a fifth place finish at the Kane Invitational with a mark of 5.49. Pearce will also compete in the triple jump. Erica Belanger will compete in the Pentathlon.
