SU Continues Streak, Defeating Pitt 6-1

SYRACUSE – The Syracuse tennis team (4-5, 1-1) defeated Pittsburgh (3-3, 1-1), 6-1 on Sunday, marking their first conference victory of the season. After posting wins in two-of-three doubles matches and five-of-six singles matches, the Orange have stretched its home court winning streak to four straight.
"We played big points extremely," said head coach Luke Jensen. "I think when you win the big points, those defining points and you're mentally stronger in those areas, that's going to happen."
Finishing first were sophomores Amanda Rodgers and Komal Safdar, who defeated Amanda Wickman and Molly Wickman, 8-3 on court two. The duo have have now won six consecutive doubles matches together. Junior Maddie Kobelt and freshman Brittany Lashway finished second, defeating Taylor Washington and Jocelyn Lu, 8-4, on court one. The triumph was Lashway's first doubles victory of her career.
The Orange continued to set the tone in the singles matches. On court one, Rodgers finished off Washington, 7-5, 6-2, for her sixth straight singles victory. On court two, Kobelt defeated Lu, 6-1, 6-3, extending her streak to five consecutive singles victories.
Wu also defeated her opponent, topping Gabrielle Catanzarti, 6-2, 6-2, on court three, to earn another point for SU. Despite losing the first set, Safdar regrouped and battled to a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 win against A. Wickman.
Lashway concluded the singles competetion defeating Kimmy Broza by a score of 6-3, 6-4.
Syracuse will hit the road next weekend traveling to Illinois on Friday Feb. 22, before heading to DePaul on Sunday, Feb. 24 to face the Blue Demons.
