ROCHESTER, N.Y. -Â The Syracuse ice hockey team won its seventh game in a row, defeating RIT, 2-1, on the road this evening. The Orange's (17-11-1, 11-3-1 CHA) two goals were scored by Nicole Renault and Akane Hosoyamada. Kallie Billadeau recorded 28 saves in SU's conference victory. The two teams wrap up the home-and-home series in Syracuse tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 9th, at 7 p.m. at Tennity Ice Pavilion.
"It was great for us to get two points tonight on the road," said head coach Paul Flanagan. "We did a very good job defensively and our penalty kill was perfect, particularly in the final minute having to kill off a 6-on-3." Â
Exactly seven minutes into the period, Hosoyamada put the Orange up 1-0 on the score board, netting her third goal of the season off of passes from Margot Scharfe and Danielle Leslie.
The Tigers tied it up two and a half minutes later at 9:26 in the first frame. Teneica Hiller scored her 12th goal of the season and the two teams were in a 1-1 deadlock. Â
Renault's second goal of the season would be an important one. The defenseman scored 3:05 into the second frame to give SU back the lead at 2-1. Both Shainn Darkangelo and Nicole Ferrara were credited with the assists.
Neither team found the back of the net for the remainder of the game.
The Orange penalty killing unit stood strong, fighting off a 6-on-4 situation and then a 6-on-3 situation in the final two minutes of the game, preserving the win. SU edged RIT in shots, 29-28. Syracuse was scoreless on the power play (0-for-3) but held RIT to 0-for-7 on the man advantage.Â
