SYRACUSE, NY -Â The Syracuse women's ice hockey team continued its winning streak by defeating RIT, 2-1, at home. The Orange (18-11-3, 12-3-1, CHA) won its eighth straight game and registered its fourth sweep of a conference opponent. Akane Hosoyamada and Margot Scharfe both scored for the Orange while Kallie Billadeau stopped 18 shots.
"I think we have a group of kids in the locker room that believe in each other," said head coach Paul Flanagan. "I think that's evidenced by the close games. We have had so many one goal games. Particularly, the last two nights, we have had to grit it out with defense. I give RIT a ton of credit. They play tough and they play hard."
It only took 56 seconds for the Orange to score its first of the night. Hosoyamada took a shot right below the blue line to give SU an early, 1-0, lead after receiving the puck from Danielle Leslie and Shiann Darkangelo.
Scharfe extended SU's lead to 2-0, at 7:53 in the second period. Freshman Melissa Piacentini passed the puck to Cara Johnson who found Scharfe on the right side of the ice. Scharfe beat Ali Binnington on the right side, and scored the eventual game-winner.
Kourtney Kunichuik would cut SU's lead to one when she at 18:49 in the second frame after a scrum in front of the net on the power play. RIT went 1-for-5 on the power play while the Orange were 0-for-5.
The Orange defense stood strong for the second night in a row in the last two minutes of the game. RIT pulled its goaltender in attempt to net the equalizer, but SU fought the offense attack off.
Hosoyamada scored a goal in last night's game against RIT, while Darkangelo, Scharfe and Leslie each had assists as well.
Syracuse wraps up the regular season with four straight home games, hosting No. 7 Mercyhurst and Lindenwood. Â
