Orange Meets Pirates in BIG EAST Tournament Second Round

NEW YORK – No. 19/20 Syracuse (23-8) begins its quest for its sixth BIG EAST Tournament title when it faces Seton Hall in the second round on Wednesday, Mar. 13 at 2 p.m. in Madison Square Garden. The Orange enters the tournament as the No. 5 seed after posting an 11-7 mark in BIG EAST play this season. Seton Hall (15-17) defeated USF in overtime in the first round.

ORANGE AT THE BIG EAST TOURNAMENT
Syracuse will play its 76th game in the BIG EAST Tournament when it takes the court on Wednesday. The Orange has an all-time record of 47-28 in the conference championship. Syracuse has won the tournament title five times, including back-to-back crowns in 2005 and 2006. SU has advanced to the semifinals the past two seasons.
The Orange is the No. 5 seed in the tournament for the fifth time. Syracuse is 5-3 as a five seed and won the 1992 championship from that part of the bracket.
Syracuse has an all-time record of 89-73 at Madison Square Garden, including a 71-45 mark under the direction of head coach Jim Boeheim.
A CLOSER LOOK AT THE ORANGE
Syracuse posted an overall record of 23-7 during the regular season. The Orange finished fifth in the BIG EAST standings with an 11-7 record in conference play.
Junior C.J. Fair and sophomore Michael Carter-Williams were named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team. Fair leads the team in scoring (14.5 ppg.) and rebounding (7.1 rpg.), while Carter-Williams ranks fourth in the nation in assists (7.58) and steals (2.87) per game.
In addition, senior Brandon Triche was a third team All-BIG EAST honoree. He has started every game of his career and ranks second on the team in scoring (13.9 ppg.) and assists (113). Sophomore Rakeem Christmas has been part of SU's starting five in every game this season and leads the squad with 63 blocks.
The Orange has received significant contributions from its bench this season. Senior James Southerland served as a reserve for most of the season before joining the starting lineup for the final two games of the regular season. He leads the team with 53 three-pointers and ranks third in scoring (13.6 ppg.).
Junior Baye Moussa Keita has played in all 31 games and ranks second on the team in blocks (33). Freshman Jerami Grant has also played in every game in 2012-13, making nine starts. He is averaging 4.5 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. Redshirt freshman Trevor Cooney gives the Orange another outside threat, while freshman DaJuan Coleman, who started the first 20 games of the season before suffering a knee injury, provides valuable minutes in the middle.
SCOUTING THE PIRATES
Seton Hall enters Wednesday's game with a 15-17 record after its 46-42 overtime win against USF in the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament.
Fuquan Edwin is the Pirates leading scorer (16.6 ppg.) and rebounder (5.8 rpg.) this season. He is one of three Seton Hall players to average double figures in scoring. Aaron Cosby is contributing 12.3 points per game, while Eugene Teague is averaging 11.1 points per contest. Tom Maayan has a team-high 98 assists this season, and Edwin's 77 steals ranks first on the team.
The Pirates are led by Kevin Willard, who became the 19th head coach in Seton Hall history in 2010. He joined the Pirates after spending three years as the head coach at Iona.
THE SERIES
The Orange leads the all-time series against the Pirates, 46-16. Syracuse has won seven of the last eight meetings between the two schools. The Orange defeated Seton Hall, 76-65. Senior Brandon Triche led SU with a career-high 29 points.
