Honolulu, Hawaii – Senior Stacy Kuwik was dominant on the mound for the SU softball team (6-10) in its 3-0 victory against East Carolina (8-14) at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium on the campus of the University of Hawaii. Kuwik pitched a complete game, two-hit shutout, while retiring four batters.
The Syracuse offense got going in the bottom of the first when freshman Corinne Ozanne hit a single to left field that scored Veronica Grant from second base. Later in the inning, the Orange had the bases loaded and junior pinch runner Alexis Partyka scored on an error by the ECU shortstop. One batter later, Ozanne scored on another ECU error to take a 2-0 lead.
Through the first three innings, Kuwik faced the minimum nine ECU hitters. After giving up a bunt single to the first hitter of the game, she struck out the Pirates in order in five-of-seven innings.
Kuwik was solid defensively, recording three putouts and making plays from the circle. The Orange defense was also strong, as it did not record a single error. Senior catcher Ashley Dimon threw out a runner attempting to steal second base in the first inning.
Junior Shirley Daniels reached base in three-of-four plate appearances, getting hit by a pitch twice and drawing a walk. Grant had the other hit for the Orange in the game.
The Orange looks to make it two in a row when it takes on the University of Utah Wednesday, March 13 at 10 p.m. ET to kick off the Chevron Spring Fling Tournament.
