A CLOSER LOOK AT THE ORANGE
Syracuse lost to Louisville, 58-53, on Saturday, Mar. 2, which was its third consecutive loss to a ranked opponent. Junior C.J. Fair led the Orange with 19 points.
Trailing by two, 25-23, in the second half, Rakeem Christmas' slam dunk started a 7-0 SU scoring run that put the Orange ahead 30-23 with 15:29 to play. The teams traded baskets most of the second half until Louisville scored six unanswered points to take its largest lead of the game, 47-40, at the 5:35 mark.
Syracuse answered with an 8-0 run of its own to take a one-point lead, 48-47, with 2:52 on the clock. Michael Carter-Williams had six points during the run. A free throw by Russ Smith tied the score and a three-pointer by Luke Hancock gave the Cardinals the lead for good with 53 seconds remaining.
Louisville went 7-for-8 from the free throw line in the final minute, but the Orange wouldn't go away as Fair's three-pointer with 4.6 seconds on the clock cut the deficit to three at 56-53. That was as close as SU could get as Smith hit a pair of free throws for the 58-53 final.
James Southerland scored 13 points off the bench for Syracuse, while Carter-Williams finished with 11 points. The pair led SU on the boards, pulling down seven rebounds each.
