Flanagan Named CHA Coach of the Year

After finishing second place in the CHA with a record of 19-14-1, Syracuse ice hockey head coach Paul Flanagan was honored as the CHA Coach of the Year. He was one of many Orange that were honored at the CHA Tournament Banquet this evening. Junior defenseman Akane Hosoyamada and junior goaltender Kallie Billadeau were named First Team All-Conference, while sophomore forward Nicole Ferrara and junior forward Margot Scharfe garnered Second Team All-Conference accolades. Freshman defenseman Nicole Renault was honored on the All-Rookie team.
Three Orange also were honored with individual awards as well. For the second-straight year Scharfe was named the Best Defensive Forward. The Best Defenseman accolade went to Hosoyamada while senior forward Holly Carrie-Mattimoe was honored with the individual sportsmanship accolade.Â
This was Flanagan's second CHA Coach of the Year Award. He was previously honored in 2009-10. In SU's 4-1 win against Lindenwood, Flanagan captured his 300th career win, becoming just the sixth active coach to reach the milestone.
Hosoyamada has seen action in every game so far this season, tallying four goals and 11 assists. The Banff, Alberta native had one power play tally this season and recorded 27 blocks. Hosoyamada concluded the regular season with a plus/minus of +9. She was named to the CHA Honor Roll three times this season.
Billadeau had an outstanding season between the pipes, notched a record of 15-8-0. Her GAA of 1.53 has her ranked seventh in the nation and second in the CHA while her save percentage of .941 has her fourth in the NCAA and first in the conference. She is tied for third in the nations with six shutouts and has a program-record of eight in her career. Billadeau was honored as the Goaltender of the Month for October and was named the CHA Goaltender of the Week four times this season.
Ferrara scored a team-high four game winning goals this season. She had 10 goals and 14 assists and her 24 points were the second-highest for SU. Three of Ferrara's game-winning goals came against Robert Morris. Ferrara had a team-high seven multipoint games. In SU's 8-1 win at Lindenwood, Ferrara had a three-point game, scoring one goal and notching two assists.
In Scharfe's junior campaign, the Toronto, Ontario native scored 11 goals and 11 assists. A major factor in SU's penalty-killing unit, Scharfe totaled 38 blocks this season. Scharfe has also scored a team-high five power play goals. Two of her strikes this season have been game-winners. This is her second-straight season being named to Second Team All-Conference and earning the Best Defensive Forward accolade.
During Renualt's first season in Orange, the defenseman scored two goals and tallied 11 assists. Both of her goals were game-winners. She also recorded 15 blocks. She had a three-point game against RPI, notching three assists.
Carrie-Mattimoe earned the Individual Sportsmanship Award, which is given to the player who most exemplifies superior conduct and sportsmanship. The senior captain led SU with 10 goals and a team-high 16 assists. Carrie-Mattimoe rewrote the SU record book in her four seasons at SU. The Sherwood Park, Alberta native is SU's career leader in games played (139), goals (39), assists (57), power play goals (19) and points (96).
The Orange face RIT in the semifinals on Friday, March 8th at 4:30 p.m. at the Mercyhurst Ice Center in Erie, Pa.
