Graduate student Lauren Penney of the women's track and field team will compete in the 3000m race at the 2013 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship this weekend in Fayetteville, Ark. The 3000m race will take place at 8:40 p.m. ET on Saturday, March 9th at the Randal Tyson Track Complex at the University of Arkansas.
ESPN3 will stream the meet live on March 8 from 6:30-10:30 p.m. ET and March 9 from 7 p.m.-9:30 p.m. ET. A tape delay of the championship will air Sunday, March 17 from 7 p.m.-9:00 p.m. ET on ESPNU.
This will be the first time in Penney's storied career that she will be competing in the NCAA indoor championships. In the 2012 outdoor season, she competed in the 5000m race, placing 22nd.
Penney qualified for this year's 3000m race with a time of 9:06.32 which she ran at the Husky Invite. The time broke her own school record of 9:12 that she set in 2012. She was also named the BIG EAST Track Athlete of the Week for her Impressive performance.
Penney currently holds three school records in the indoor mile (4:37.41), indoor 3,000m (9:06.32) and the outdoor 5,000m run (16:09.44).
SU NCAA History
Last year's NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship proved to be an exciting one for the Orange. Jarret Eaton because Syracuse's first NCAA individual champion, winning the 60m hurdle title. Eaton's time of 7.54 seconds won the NCAA 60-meter hurdle title, and beat the field by 0.01 seconds.
