ERIE, Pa.- An overtime goal by junior forward Sadie St. Germain helped the Syracuse ice hockey team to a 2-1 win against RIT in the semifinal game of the CHA Tournament. The #2 Orange advances to the championship game tomorrow, Saturday, March 8th, at 3 p.m to face #1 Mercyhurst.
"That was a great win for us," said head coach Paul Flanagan. "I thought our team never let up from start to finish. We very easily could have been at the losing end of that game. I give RIT a ton of credit. Their goaltender was outstanding and we outshot them quite a bit especially after the first two periods. I'm proud of our team."
Play was even on both sides of the ice during the overtime period until Brittney Krebs picked up the rebound off of goaltender Kallie Billadeau's save. Krebs found St. Germain who skated down the center side of the ice, made a move around an RIT defender and shot the puck past Ali Binnington to give the Orange it's second overtime win of the season. St. Germain's seventh goal of the season came 10:08 into the extra frame.
This was the fourth one-goal game between these two teams this season. SU defeated RIT 2-1 three times in the 2012-13 regular season, with one of those games going into overtime. The Orange and Tigers tied, 2-2, in overtime in its first matchup of the season. SU is now 10-8-0 in one-goal games this season.
This was the fifth time the Orange have played in OT Â in 2012-13. SU is now 2-2-1 in the extra frame.
With the win, SU will face Mercyhurst , who defeated #4 Robert Morris, 2-1, to advance to the championship game. SU went 0-4 against the Lakers this season. This will be the fourth time the two teams are facing each other in the CHA tournament and third in the championship game.
Both teams were scoreless in the first period. The Orange went 0-for-2 on the power play in the first 20 minutes of play while holding the Tigers to two shots on their only power play opportunity of the period. SU held a 10-5 advantage in shots after the first period.
The Tigers would strike first 6:32 into the second period. Tenecia Hiller had a takeaway in the neutral zone and found Kim Schlattman up the ice. Schlattman beat Billadeau one-on-one and RIT took a 1-0 lead. Â
SU would score on its sixth power play of the night after Kristina Moss got called for tripping. During the power play, Akane Hosoyamada put the puck on net where Jacquie Greco was waiting in front of the crease. Greco found LaCombe who scored her fourth goal and first power play tally of the season, tying the game at 1-1.
Neither team could net the equalizer and the game headed into overtime. After three periods, the Orange had outshot the Tigers, 41-15. Â Overall, the Orange had a 45-23 advantage in shots. Syracuse was 1-for-7 on the power play and held RIT to 0-for-4.Â
