SU Falls in CHA Title Game, 4-1

ERIE, Pa. – The Syracuse ice hockey team's bid for a CHA Tournament title fell short, as the Orange was defeated by Mercyhurst 4-1 at the Mercyhurst Ice Center this afternoon. Sophomore forward Shiann Darkangelo scored the only goal for the Orange while junior goaltender Kallie Billadeau recorded 27 saves in the loss. The Orange wrapped up the 2012-13 season with a 20-15-1 record.Â
This was the Orange's third appearance in the CHA Tournament game. SU faced Mercyhurst all three times in the championship game, falling in all three. Syracuse is now 3-5 all-time in the CHA Tournament.
The Orange took advantage of its seventh power play of the game, when Darkangelo scored a last second goal in the second frame to break the 0-0 tie. Krebs fired a shot it from the blue line. The puck was tipped by Darkangelo with one second left and the Orange was up, 1-0, heading into the final intermission.
The Lakers answered Syracuse's 1-0 lead with four goals in the third period to secure its 4-1 victory.
The game-tying goal came from Molly Byrne who scored a top shelf goal at 4:41. Following the tally, Mercyhurst was on the power play after Melissa Piacentini was called for tripping. Caroline Luczak scored 1:52 later to give the Lakers its first lead of the game. Â
The Orange allowed its first shorthanded goal all season when Christine Bestland scored at 9:32 and extended Mercyhurst's lead to 3-1.
The Lakers secured its victory with an empty net goal with 1:15 remaining in the game.
Both forward Sadie St. Germain and Krebs were named to the CHA All-Tournament Team. St. Germain scored the overtime game-winning goal in yesterday's semifinal game against RIT. Krebs had the primary assist on St. Germain's tally as well as the assist on Darkangleo's power play goal in today's game.
The game marks the end of seniors Holly Carrie-Mattimoe's and Jacquie Greco's career in Orange. The two served as captains of SU this season and have been strong leaders both on and off the ice in their four years here. Carrie-Mattimoe leaves SU as the Orange's career leader in games played (140), goals (39), assists (57), power play goals (19) and points (96). Beginning the year at defenseman, Greco was moved up to forward and has tallied 10 goals and three assists her senior season.
