TAMPA, Fla. – Fourth-seeded Syracuse will look for its first-ever tournament title in program history this weekend, when the Orange squares off against No. 13 seed Connecticut in the opening round of the 2013 BIG EAST Tournament. The first serve is set for noon at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts.
SU earned the fourth-seed after posting a 12-7 record in 2013, including a 7-1 mark in conference play. Ranked in the ITA Top 75 for the first three weeks of the season, the Orange picked up a win against nationally ranked DePaul, defeating the No. 69 Blue Demons, 4-3.
Sophomore Amanda Rodgers led the team in 2013 with a 13-5 overall record, posting a 9-3 mark in the No. 1 singles position. Paired with sophomore Komal Safdar, the duo has combined for a 13-1 record on court two in doubles competition.
Should the Orange beat the Huskies in the quarterfinals, SU will take on the winner of the match between No. 5 DePaul and No. 12 Providence on Friday, April 19 at noon.
SCOUTING THE HUSKIES:
Connecticut will enter the BIG EAST Tournament after posting a 7-10 overall record in 2013, earning the No. 13 seed. In the most recent outing, the Huskies defeated Southern New Hampshire 6-1, sweeping the doubles competition. In the most recent BIG EAST matchup, UConn lost to Providence 4-3, slipping to 2-5 in the conference.
A CLOSER LOOK AT THE TOP THREE:
Top-seeded Notre Dame faced the most opponents ranked in the ITA by far, squaring off against 11 to earn the No. 21 spot in the national rankings. USF has remained consistently ranked throughout the season, with both singles and doubles pairs within the ranks as well. Third-seeded Louisville put together a 14-7 record overall and went a perfect 8-0 on its home court. The Cards also finished the season ranked No. 69 according to the ITA.
