SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The SU softball team fell short in both games of a doubleheader this afternoon against Seton Hall at the SU Softball Stadium, losing to the Pirates 4-1 in game one and 16-15 in game two.
Sophomore Julie Wambold highlighted the afternoon, as she became the 16th member of SU program history to hit a grand slam. Wambold joins freshman Corinne Ozanne in elite club, after Ozanne recorded hers against DePaul earlier this season.
GAME 1 – Seton Hall 4, Syracuse 1
The Orange opened game one looking fight a one-run deficit after Danielle Destaso cranked a home run to right center. Sophomore Mary Dombrowski answered back for the Orange, smacking a homer to left to tie the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the second.
With the game tied and two runners on, Seton Hall broke away with the advantage after Coltey Sheldon hit a single up the middle, scoring Maria Deluca. SU held the Pirates to just one run during the play, as freshman Corinne Ozanne chased down Alex Rabbets before tagging her out to end the inning.
SHU added two more insurance runs in the top of the sixth for a 4-1 lead, helped out by a solo shot from Deluca.
GAME 2 – Seton Hall 16, Syracuse 15
Syracuse rallied from a deficit as high as 10-runs in game two, but fell short by just one run, handing Seton Hall a 16-15 victory. The outing featured a grand total of 31 run off of 35 hits between both clubs.
The Pirates came out swinging in the first two innings, posting 11 runs off of 12 hits for an 11-3 lead. Both Britt Hammer and Deluca posted two singles each, while Destaso led the way with a single and a homer during the hitting streak.
The Orange kept the bats going in the third, as Nandin led off the inning with a single to left, followed by another single from senior Gaby Torzilli. Torzilli then scored on a fielder's choice, before senior Veronica Grant drove in Chitkowski with a single to right to make it 11-5.
Seton Hall added four more runs in the fourth, but SU matched that number in its next at bat as Ozanne led off the fourth with a home run to right field. Chitkowski followed with her third long ball of the season, driving in three to make it 15-9.
Ozanne kept the Orange with a three RBI single to center, making it 15-10 before Syracuse broke open the scoring in the bottom of the sixth. Junior Shirley Daniels began the comeback attempt with a double to left, before stealing her 24th base of the season.
After senior Veronica Grant, junior Jasmine Watson and Wambold all walked to score Daniels, Wambold stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs. Wambold then crushed her sixth home run of the season and second collegiate grand slam to lift the Orange to within one run of the lead at 16-15.
The Syracuse comeback was cut short though as Chitkowski hit into a double play in the seventh to end the game.
Ozanne went three-for-three with two runs and three RBI, while Watson went two-for-four with two runs and two RBI. Torzilli made her first appearance of the season in the circle for the Orange, as well as three others, but freshman Lindsey Larkin ultimately recorded the loss, dropping to 1-3 on the year.
