Three members of the Syracuse women's lacrosse team have been named nominees for the 2013 Tewaaraton Trophy. Seniors Becca Block and Michelle Tumolo and junior Alyssa Murray are among the 25 candidates for the award, which is given to the top lacrosse player in the nation across all divisions.
Syracuse joins Maryland as the only schools in the nation with three nominees. Florida has the highest number of nominees with four.
Block anchors the Orange's defense, which has held its opponents to less than 10 goals in 11 games this season. The Preseason BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year leads the team in ground balls, caused turnovers (25) and draw controls.
Tumolo ranks second on the team in assists (24) and third in points (46) and goals (22). She has climbed to third place on Syracuse's all-time scoring list with 278 points. She has 137 career assists, which is the second-highest total in school history. In addition, Tumolo's 141 career goals rank fifth on SU's career leader list. She has missed the last two games after suffering a knee injury against Cornell.
Murray is Syracuse's leader in points, goals and assists this season. In addition, she ranks on the squad in caused turnovers and ground balls. Earlier this season Murray became the sixth player in school history to reach the 200-point plateau. She ranks sixth on the all-time scoring list and is fifth in career goals and sixth in career assists.
Five men's and five women's finalists will be announced May 9 and invited to the Tewaaraton Award Ceremony. The 2013 winners will be announced May 30, 2013, at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C.
