Orange Softball Drops Pair to DePaul

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - DePaul (22-13, 9-1) combined for 26 runs and 28 hits as Syracuse softball (13-19, 1-4) lost both games of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, 15-6 and 11-0, in the home opener at the SU Softball Stadium. The Orange and Blue Demons conclude their three-game series on Sunday at 11 a.m.
Game 1: DePaul 15, Syracuse 6 (6 innings)
Corinne Ozanne hit a grand slam in the bottom of the second inning to give Syracuse a 5-2 lead, but DePaul went on to outscore the Orange, 13-2, the rest of the way to win game one, 15-6, in six innings.

The Blue Demons scored multiple runs in every inning from the second on, finishing with 18 hits, three of which were home runs.

Stacy Kuwik took the loss for SU, allowing eight runs on 10 hits and one walk with two strikeouts in four innings. Danielle Chitkowski (4 ER, 5 H) and Lindsey Larkin (1 ER, 3 H) each pitched one inning of relief for the Orange.

Kisten Verdun (14-7) got the win in the circle, allowing five runs on three hits and five walks, while striking out seven despite hitting six batters. She went 4-4 at the plate with three RBIs.

Mary Connelly drove in five runs for the Blue Demons with a two-run triple in the third inning and a three-run home run in the fourth. Samantha Dodd was 4-5 with two RBIs and three runs scored.

SU took the early lead in the first when Jasmine Watson scored the game's first run when Veronica Grant was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. After Paige Peterson's two-run home run in the top of the second gave DePaul a 2-1 lead, a triple by Mary Dombrowski and walks by Morgan Nandin and Watson loaded the bases with two outs for Ozanne. The freshman blasted the 3-2 pitch from Verdun over the fence in center field for a grand slam, her fourth home run of the season.

DePaul's offense went on to score three runs in the third, three more in the fourth, four in the fifth and three in the sixth to end the game an inning early.

Game 2: DePaul 11, Syracuse 0 (6 innings)
Game two was a tight 1-0 game until the top of the fourth when the Blue Demons scored four runs on three hits and a walk, and then scored six more on four hits and two walks in the sixth to defeat the Orange, 11-0, in six innings.

Hannah Penna (8-5) threw a two-hitter for DePaul, striking out eight and walking two in six innings. Gaby Torzilli singled with two outs in the fifth for SU's first hit and Watson doubled with two outs in the sixth for its second hit.

Peterson hit a solo home run to lead off the second inning and give DePaul the early lead. She added a two-run home run in the top of the fourth, her third round-tripper of the day, to make it a 3-0 game. Later that inning, Bree Brown hits a two-run homer of her own to make 5-0.

Mary Connolly and Verdun highlighted DePaul's six-run sixth inning with a two-run single and two-run home runs, respectively.

Kuwik (8-6) took the loss for SU, surrendering 11 runs, 10 earned, on 10 hits and four walks while striking out two.
