Flushing Meadows, N.Y. – The Syracuse tennis squad (10-7) rallied from a 1-0 deficit after losing the doubles point to defeat conference foe St. John's (7-9) this morning in a close 4-3 battle.
With the victory, SU improves to 6-1 in BIG EAST play having lost just one league match earlier this season.
The Orange and the Red Storm opened the contest with two tight doubles matches, as Amber Washington and Diamond Adams slipped by junior Maddie Kobelt and freshman Brittany Lashway by a score of 8-7. Sophomores Amanda Rodgers and Komal Safdar also saw their 11-match winning streak snapped with an 8-6 loss on court two.
Heading into the singles competition, SU picked up two quick points take a 2-1 lead with two-set victories on courts five and six from Lashway and freshman Alex Aiello. St. John's answered back with a pair of tight three-set wins from the No. 1 and 2 spots to reclaim the lead.
With the match on the line, Safdar tied the match with a 6-0, 5-7, 6-3 triumph against Adams on court three. Sophomore Jimena Wu clinched the win for the Orange, taking down Yanita Amaudova by a score of 7-5, 4-6, 10-6 to conclude the competition.
SU will wrap up the BIG EAST slate tomorrow with a morning matchup against Rutgers at the RU Tennis Complex. The first serve is set for 10 a.m.
