WEST CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa. – Senior JoJo Marasco was named the 2013 BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year, and a total of five Syracuse University men's lacrosse players received all-league honors Wednesday, May 1 when the BIG EAST Conference announced its award winners and all-conference teams at the pre-championship banquet in the Philadelphia Marriott West hotel.
Marasco is the first Orange player to be tabbed the conference's top midfielder. In addition, he was a unanimous All-BIG EAST First Team selection. Defenseman Brian Megill and midfielder Luke Cometti joined Marasco on the all-conference first team. Long-stick midfielder Matt Harris and attackman Derek Maltz were named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team.
Voting for the all-conference teams and individual awards was conducted by the league's seven head coaches following the conclusion of the regular season. Coaches were not permitted to vote for their own players.
For Marasco, it's his third consecutive all-conference honor and the first time he's been named to the league's top squad. One of the 25 nominees for the Tewaaraton Award as the nation's best player, Marasco ranks fourth in the BIG EAST in scoring (3.36 points per game) and second in assists (2.14 per game). He leads the Orange in points (47) and assists (30). He is currently tied with Brad Kotz (1984) for second on the SU season record list for most assists by a midfielder. Marasco has at least one point in every game this season and has 12 multi-point games.
Megill is a unanimous All-BIG EAST First Team selection for the second year in a row and it's the third straight season he's been named all-conference. Megill holds the Orange record for career caused turnovers (98). He ranks second on the team this year in ground balls (36) and he is tied for the team lead with 20 caused turnovers. In addition, Megill was selected as the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week three times during the regular season.
Cometti has a team-best 24 goals and he paced the Orange with 14 goals in conference play. Against Rutgers, Cometti set a career high with six goals to lead Syracuse to a 12-11 victory after the Orange trailed 10-5 in the fourth quarter. Overall, Cometti is third on the squad with 31 points (24 goals, seven assists).
Harris is Syracuse's top LSM. He leads the Orange in ground balls (37) and he ranks third on the team in caused turnovers (17). Harris has also contributed on offense, scoring two goals and passing out one assist.
Maltz is tied with Cometti for the team goals lead with 24. He ranks fourth on the Orange in points (29). Maltz has three hat tricks in 2013, including a season-high four goals versus Canisius, and he's scored a goal in all but one game this season.
The conference's four other major awards were spread out among three teams. Villanova took home two awards as John LoCascio was selected as the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year and Mike Corrado was voted BIG EAST Coach of the Year. The other two major awards went to Kieran McArdle of St. John's (BIG EAST Attack Player of the Year) and Kris Alleyne of Rutgers (BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year).
Syracuse is the No. 2 seed in this week's BIG EAST Championship, which gets underway tomorrow at Villanova Stadium. The Orange will face third-seeded Notre Dame at 4:30 p.m. in the first semifinal. The second semifinal features top-seeded Villanova against No. 4 seed Georgetown at 7 p.m. The two semifinal winners square off at 12 p.m. on Saturday, May 4 to decide the conference championship.
