TAMPA, Fla. – In its 10th appearance at the BIG EAST Tournament, No. 6 seed Syracuse (23-28, 10-12) will square off against No. 3 seed Louisville (45-10, 18-4) in the first round of the event on Thursday, May 9 at 4 p.m. in the USF Softball Stadium.
WEEK IN REVIEW:
SU opened the week splitting a non-conference doubleheader against Cornell. With a bid to the BIG EAST Tournament on the line, the Orange regular-season finale against Providence was the deciding factor. SU split its doubleheader on Saturday, rallying from a 5-1 loss with an 11-7 victory in game two. Syracuse sealed its spot in the tourney with a win the following day, helped out by junior Shirley Daniels, who posted a multi-homer performance in the 9-4 triumph.
SETTING THE SCENE:
Syracuse is making its 10th overall and ninth consecutive appearance in the BIG EAST Tournament this weekend. After splitting the first two games of the critical series against Providence, the Orange defeated the Friars 9-4 in the weekend finale to improve to 10-12 in the conference. SU will square off against No. 3 seed Louisville. Syracuse took one-of-three games from the Cards during the regular season and is currently 2-1 against UofL in BIG EAST Tournament games. In the most recent outing between the two clubs, the Orange and Louisville met in the 2010 and 2011 championship games, where SU won both titles.
SCOUTING THE CARDINALS:
The defending BIG EAST Champions are 45-10 overall and finished the BIG EAST slate with a 18-4 record to claim the No. 3 seed this year. Louisville has also been consistently ranked throughout the season, coming in at No. 11/12 in the most recent standings. The Cards highlighted their season with a 5-1 victory against No. 1 Oklahoma, for the club's first win against a top-ranked opponent.
As a team, Louisville is leading the conference in several categories including batting average (.364), slugging percentage (.604), on-base percentage (.441), runs scored (173), doubles (45) and homers (60). Individually, three members of the Cardinals roster are batting .400 or higher, led by Katie keller, who's leading the team in almost every offensive category including runs (58), hits (74), doubles (18), triples (2) home runs (12) and RBI (54).
Carlisa Connell and Rachel Le Coq are leading the Cardinals in the circle, as the duo both have 20 or more wins each. Connell is leading the way with a 25-4 overall record with a 2.31 ERA, while Le Coq has tallied a 20-6 mark with a 1.69 ERA.
DANIELS SETS BIG EAST RECORD AND EARNSSECOND WEEKLY HONOR:
Following her first multi-home run game and two record breaking performances last week, junior Shirley Daniels earned her second nod to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. After stealing two bases against Cornell in game one of a doubleheader, Daniels became the SU single-season leader in the category. Five days later, she tied a Syracuse single-game record with three stolen bases against Providence and became the BIG EAST single-season leader in the category with a 15-17 mark in conference games.
