The Syracuse men's and women's track and field teams each earned honors for academic performance during the 2013 season as announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association yesterday. Six individual student-athletes were also named to All-Academic teams, including four from the women's team and two from the men's.
Sophomore Martin Hehir, a biology major, earns his first track and field All-Academic honor and second USTFCCCA honor, as he was named to the cross country list earlier this year. Â Along with his impressive GPA, Hehir ran to a 20th place finish at the NCAA East Prelims in the 5000 meter race to qualify for this distinction.
Junior Reed Kamyszek, a biochemistry major, was also named to the All-Academic ranks. His performance in the 10,000 meter race at the NCAA East Prelims combined with his 4.0 GPA was enough to be among the 448 men named to the USTFCCCA list released this week.
SaDe Lewis, Sarah Pagano, Lauren Penney and Jesse Petersen represented the Orange on the women's All-Academic list of 710 student-athletes.
Penney earns her fourth spot on the track and field All-Academic team of her career, qualifying this year with her eighth place performance in the 5000 meter race at the NCAA Championship meet. In addition to this honor, Penney earned All-American accolades in both the indoor and outdoor season and was named to the Capital One Academic All-District Track & Field/Cross Country team this year.
Pagano, a recent graduate with a degree in biochemistry, earns her third All-Academic team selection. She placed 22nd at the NCAA East Prelims in the 10000 meter race to qualify for this award. She was also named to the cross country All-Academic team earlier this year.
Lewis and Petersen each earn their first All-Academic distinctions this season. Lewis, a junior sprinter and architecture major, took 34th in the 100 meter hurdles at the NCAA East Prelims this outdoor season. Petersen, a sophomore distance runner and exercise science major, finished 19th in the 5000 meter run at the NCAA East Prelims.
