Orange Visits Colgate for Season Opener

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – After completing the most successful season in program history in 2012, the 20th-ranked SU men's soccer team (0-0-0) kicks off its 2013 campaign when it visits Colgate (0-0-0) on Friday, Aug. 30. The Orange and Raiders renew their local rivalry at 7 p.m. at Van Doren Field in the season opener for both teams.

ORANGE IN OPENERS
Syracuse is 39-34-5 all-time in season-opening games and has won its first game of the season in five of the past eight years. This is the second time in the past three years SU has started the season at Colgate. The Orange opened the 2011 season with a 1-0 road loss to the Raiders.
Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre is 8-4-2 all-time in season openers during his career.
PRESEASON RECAP
The Orange finished the preseason with a 3-0 record. Syracuse outscored its opponents 11-3 in the three games (Fordham, 2-1; Ryerson, 6-1; Georgetown, 3-1).
Sophomore Stefanos Stamoulacatos scored a goal in all three matches, while junior Nick Perea registered seven points (three goals, one assist) during the preseason, including a five-point performance at Georgetown.
Freshmen Alex Halis, Chris Nanco and Emil Ekblom all made an impact. Halis and Nanco had one goal and one assist apiece versus Ryerson on Aug. 20, while Ekblom registered one assist against both Fordham and Ryerson.
SCOUTING THE RAIDERS
Colgate lost its top three scorers from a year ago. Tyler Forbes is the Raiders' top returning offensive threat. He registered six points on three goals in 2012. Starting goalkeeper Liam Stapleton made 38 saves and had one shutout last season. Stapleton posted a 1.19 goals-against average in 1,133 minutes of work.
Erik Ronning is in his ninth season as the head coach at Colgate. He has a 70-50-32 overall record and has led the Raiders to three Patriot League titles.
THE COLGATE SERIES
The Raiders own a 29-25-1 advantage in the series and he two teams have split the last five meetings, 2-2-1.
Syracuse has won two of the last three pairings, both at home. SU dominated the Raiders, 6-0, in 2012. The six goals were an SU Soccer Stadium record and the most goals for the Orange in the series since 1936 (8).

The Orange hosts Hartwick in its home opener on Monday, Sept. 2 at 7 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium. Admission is free.
