Two former members of the Syracuse ice hockey team were drafted to the Canadian Women's Hockey League on Monday. Holly Carrie-Mattimoe (2009-13) and Lisa Mullan (2008-12) were both selected to join the Toronto Furies as forwards.
Carrie-Mattimoe, taken second in the second round (7th overall), was a standout player during her time at SU. She finished her career as the all-time leader in points (96), goals (39) and assists (57) for the Orange, topped the SU chart in career multi-point games (26) and played in all but two games of her four year career.Â
"I am extremely excited to have been selected 7th overall to Toronto," Carrie-Mattimoe said following the draft on Monday. "I am looking forward to joining a great team and organization where I am hoping to help out in any way that I can while playing alongside the greatest players in the world. I am very grateful for the opportunity. "
Mullan, taken in the eighth round (37th overall), finished her SU career with 51 points and 22 goals. She ranks fifth in the SU record book for multi-point games with 13 and eighth in career goals.
"Lisa is known for her grittiness and work ethic," said Rebecca Davies, General Manager of the Toronto Furies. "She comes to the rink ready to battle and we are hopefully that she will bring her aggressive game to the Furies."
Head Coach Paul Flanagan is excited to see the SU alums continue their hockey careers after college.
"As our sport grows at the youth and collegiate levels, it's great to see that our alums have a place to continue their careers," Flanagan said. "Holly being drafted early in the first round is no surprise. She established herself as one of the top players in the CHA in the past few years and should transition to the CWHL nicely. Holly's combination of athleticism and hockey intellect make her a versatile forward who can play any role. Lisa brings her experience from playing overseas last season, along with her strong skating ability, heavy shot and physical presence. We wish them the best!"
