Ennis, Hosoyamada Make the Grade For Scholar-Athlete of the Week

SYRACUSE, N.Y.—A pair of Canadians are the Orange Scholar Athletes of the Week. Men's basketball freshman guard Tyler Ennis (Brampton, Ontario) and ice hockey senior forward Akane Hosoyamada (Banff, Alberta) earned the honor for the week of Jan. 13, 2014.

Hosoyamada, who was the 2013 College Hockey America Best Defenseman and an All-CHA First Team selection, has tallied eight points on four goals and four assists and notched three goals in the last three games. Against Vermont she scored the game-winner with eight seconds left in regulation. Hosoyamada has 44 points in her career, the third-most among active SU players, and the second-most career assists (34). Hosoyamada is majoring in heath and exercise science in the School of Education.

Ennis averages 11.6 points per game, the fourth-highest mark on the team, and 5.7 assists per game, the third-best average in the Atlantic Coast Conference. He leads the ACC in steals (2.6 per game) and has the second-best assist-to-turnover ratio in the conference (4.1). He has reached double-figure scoring in 12 games this year including a 28-point performance in the 92-81 win against California to make it to the finals at the Maui Invitational. Ennis is majoring in sport management in the David Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics.

Hosoyamada and the Syracuse ice hockey team are back in action at Colgate on Tuesday, Jan. 14 at 7 p.m. (TWC SportsChannel) and returns home after a four-game road trip to take on Rochester Institute of Technology on Friday, Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. in Tennity Ice Pavilion.

Ennis and the men's basketball team play at Boston College on Monday night at 9 p.m., which will air on ESPNU, and return home to host Pittsburgh at home on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 4 p.m. in the Dome (ESPN/ESPN2).
