ST. LOUIS - For the third time in as many days, freshman Tyler Ennis was placed on a midseason watch list - this time for the 2014 Integris Wayman Tisdale Award – announced by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association on Friday, Jan. 24.
The Tisdale Award is presented annually to the national freshman of the year. Ennis is one of nine rookies included on the midseason watch list. The freshman guard was also named to the John R. Wooden and Oscar Robertson Trophy midseason watch lists this past week. He was also one of 10 players originally identified to the Tisdale Preseason Watch List back in November.
Ennis, a three-time ACC Rookie of the Week, is one of four Syracuse players to average double-digits in scoring, coming in with 11.9 per outing. He is fourth in the nation with a 4.13 assist-to-turnover ratio, sixth with 48 steals and ranks second in the ACC with 5.5 assists per game. Against California in the EA Sports Maui Invitational, Ennis dropped in a career-best 28 points.
The annual award, which recognizes the top freshman in college basketball, was renamed to honor Wayman Tisdale beginning in 2011. Tisdale was the first freshman to receive All-America honors from the USBWA in 1983 when he averaged 24.5 points and 10.3 rebounds. He went on to become a three-time All-American at Oklahoma, was a member of the USA Olympic gold medal team in 1984 and played 12 seasons in the NBA. Tisdale died of complications from cancer in 2009 at the age of 44.
Former SU standout Carmelo Anthony won the award as National Freshman of the Year in 2003.
The award is to be presented to the national freshman of the year at the Devon Energy College Basketball Awards on April 14, 2014, at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City.
