SYRACUSE, N.Y- Men's basketball senior guard Nolan Hart (Albany, N.Y.) and women's ice hockey forward senior Margot Scharfe (Toronto, Ontario) are the Orange Scholar-Athletes of the Week for Dec. 30, 2013.
Hart made the men's hoops team as a walk-on prior to his freshman year and has played in 17 games in his SU career, including two this season. As a junior, Hart saw action in 11 contests and scored his first collegiate basket against Colgate. This year, Hart's only point came on a free throw against Binghamton. The Albany native was named to the BIG EAST Conference All-Academic Team as a sophomore and is a three-time member of the Athletic Director's honor roll. Hart is majoring in sport management in the David B. Flak College of Sport and Human Dynamics.
Scharfe is currently one back of the team lead with 11 points on the season. The six goals puts her third best on the squad while her short-handed goal in SU's 4-1 win against Lindenwood is just one of two by the team this year. Against Union on Oct. 26, Scharfe recorded her only multi-goal game of the campaign with two goals in addition to one assist for three points and was later named the CHA Player of the Week for her performance. As a junior, she was named to the College Hockey America Second Team and was honored as the CHA Best Defensive Forward.
For the third consecutive season, Scharfe earned CHA All-Academic honors and was on the Athletic Director's honor roll in each of her semesters at SU thus far. Scharfe is pursuing a double major in Advertising and Psychology in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and the College of Arts and Sciences, respectively.
Hart and the nationally ranked No. 2/2 men's basketball (12-0) team close out the non-conference on Tuesday, December 31 at 3 p.m. with Eastern Michigan. Syracuse opens Atlantic Coast Conference play for the first time on Saturday, Jan. 4 at 2 p.m. against Miami.
After a month off, Scharfe and the women's ice hockey team (8-8-2) make the trek to Vermont for a two-game series with the Catamounts on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 4 and 5.
