BALTIMORE – The Syracuse Orange men's lacrosse team is ranked second in the 2014 Lacrosse Magazine Preseason Top 20, released Monday, Jan. 6 on the magazine's website. It's the second No. 2 ranking for the 2013 national finalists. Syracuse was also tabbed the second-best team in the land last month by Inside Lacrosse in its Face-Off Yearbook preseason poll.
Defending national champion Duke tops the Lacrosse Magazine preseason rankings. The Blue Devils and the Orange are followed by North Carolina, Denver and Notre Dame in the top five. Princeton is No. 6, followed by Maryland, Penn State and Virginia. Albany rounds out the top 10.
Syracuse is the preseason favorite in the Atlantic Coast Conference after being picked to win the league in its first year. The Orange is coming off a 16-4 season in which it won the BIG EAST Championship and advanced to the NCAA title game for the 17th time in school history. SU brings back eight of its top 10 scorers, including Kevin Rice who was second on the team with 55 points (23 goals, 32 assists) last year. The team also returns a pair of preseason All-America defenders in Sean Young and Matt Harris as well as starting goaltender Dominic Lamolinara.
The Orange begins the 2014 campaign on Jan. 25 with a three-way scrimmage against Le Moyne and Hofstra at the Carrier Dome. It opens the regular season at home against Siena on Feb. 10.
