Sam Rodgers becomes 13th member of the Orange to receive the honor
Senior captain Sam Rodgers is the 13th student-athlete in Syracuse football history to be selected to the Capital One Academic All-America Team, which is selected by CoSIDA.
Rodgers was named to the second team for his work in the classroom and community in addition to his on-field success. He earned Capital One Academic All-District honors in each of the last three seasons and was also an AFCA Good Works Team Honoree this season.
The State College, Pa. native served as the team's long snapper in every game of his college career and was elected as a team captain by his teammates this season.
Rodgers is also a Remembrance Scholar for the 2014-15 academic year, which is one of the highest awards a Syracuse University student can receive. Each year, the University awards 35 Remembrance Scholarships to students based on academic achievement, citizenship and service to the community in honor of the 35 Syracuse students who perished in the Lockerbie bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 in 1988.
Rodgers also uses his education to aid in one of his many community service activities. As a nutrition major, he speaks with local middle school students about the importance of a healthy diet and eating habits.
In addition, he has made a pair of mission trips to Haiti in the last two years with the Poverty Resolutions organization. While there, he built greenhouses for the Mission of Grace orphanage to help create a reliable food source. He also taught the children English and ran a soccer clinic for more than 100 children from the surrounding village. He was able to provide soccer balls, shoes and cleats to many of the kids in attendance.
Rodgers is also a founder and current president of the Syracuse chapter of Uplifting Athletes, a member of the national Uplifting Athletes organization that aligns college football with rare diseases and raises them to national priority through outreach, research and advocacy.
Rodgers organized the third-annual Lift for Life event this summer, which raises awareness and funds to combat brain tumors, a cause Rodgers and the chapter decided to take on after former Orange punter Rob Long was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2010.
He and his teammates are also active with the Building Men program and the Ronald McDonald House.
Rodgers joins Fred Mautino, Howard Goodman, Tony Romano, Tim Green, Pat O'Neill, Mark Baniewicz, Rich Scanlon, Mat Tarullo, Jim McKenzie, Kevyn Scott, Nick Romeo and Ryan Durand as members of the Orange to earn CoSida Academic All-America honors.
