CAMBRIDGE, Mass - The Syracuse tennis team closed out its non-conference schedule on Sunday, Feb. 9 with a 6-1 loss at nationally-ranked No. 66 Harvard at Murr Center.
"I'm beginning to sound like a broken record, but we are competing really well," said interim head coach Shelley George. "This is the first time I thought all six players were firing. It was a great team effort from start to finish in both singles and doubles."
Harvard (4-1) topped Syracuse (0-5) on the first doubles court, but the team of juniors Amanda Rodgers and Komal Safdar evened things up with a 6-4 triumph at the second spot. In the third position, junior Breanna Bachini and Rhiann Newborn were ahead 4-2 and serving with the chance to go up 5-3 and steal the doubles point. However, Amanda Lin and Sylvia Li broke the serve and went on to take the match 6-4 and give the Crimson a 1-0 lead.
"They (Bachini and Newborn) were a new doubles team out there for the first time." Said George. "We will keep getting better in our doubles. It's crucial to gain momentum going into singles."
Despite winning just one singles match, the Orange put up a strong fight against the hosts. Bachini was the lone winner in individual action, earning a comeback win at fifth singles by a score of 2-6, 6-3, 10-7. Rodgers and Newborn also went wire-to-wire with their opponents at first and fourth singles, respectively.
After dropping the first set, Rodgers bounced back to win the second. She ultimately full 4-6, 6-3, 4-10 in the super tiebreaker. Newborn on the other hand started off with a slim 7-6 victory in the first set before losing the next two 3-6, 7-10.
Syracuse takes next weekend off then opens play for the first time in the Atlantic Coast Conference with matches at No. 47 NC State on Friday, Feb. 21 at 2:30 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 23 at No. 10 Duke at noon.
